First Year Dynasty Trade Help

For a first year dynasty start up league.

It's not very exciting, but i've never traded picks before so I could use some help.

I trade:
First round (3rd overall)
Second round (22nd overall)
Fourth round (46 overall)

I get:
First round (8th overall)
Second round (16th overall)
Fourth round (41 overall)

I'm having a hard time deciding what to do with my third overall pick, and i believe there is at least 8 guys I would be comfortable selecting there. (McDavid will go one, Crosby, Matthews, Eichel, Laine, Karlsson, Schleife, Kucherov, Draisaitl)

So I move back to 8th, and jump up in the second hopefully to select a top tier goalie (I believe there is 3, and I would love to have one. My plan would backfire if they all got taken..)

And jump up in the fourth.

I could try to get my goalie in the first and then load up on the rest of the roster the remainder of the draft..

Is this points only? Or multi-cat?

If this is a points only, then yes, I'd take the deal. If this is a multi-cat league, I'd stand pat. The difference between #3 and #8 in a multi-cat is quite a bit IMO.

I'd take Karlsson at #3. From there, I'd rank the top 10:
Eichel/Matthews
Kane/Kucherov/Tarasenko/Ovechkin/Backstrom
Benn/Malkin/Laine

Do you see how much teams have to pay to move up in the first round. Esp into top 3 picks. As much as I agree about the depth of talent you can make more upgrades for that first rd jump. Especially since he obviously wants someone in specific

The fourth round swap is a wash in this deal and I would get rid of it (the pick difference in the 4th is just a distraction). The 5 pick jump in the first is a much bigger gap than the 6 pick jump in the second. I would try something like your first and third for their 1 and 2. So something like your 3 and 28 for their 8 and 16.

I agree with this. And I might draft a goalie (Price or Holtby) in the 1st round because there aren't many elite options available at that position. If you end up with someone like Patrick Kane or Nicklas Backstrom in the 2nd round as your top forward, then that's not bad at all. Assuming Karlsson is gone at #8 of course.

How about your first and 3rd for his 1st and 2nd and 2nd next year that's more like it for me. Prices to move up to that level should be higher. It's dynasty so u need to plan ahead and get as many picks per draft as possible

I agree with the sentiment however; I read the post as though OP was the one initiating the trade. In which case he is not bargaining from a position of strength. They may have better luck just tossing in a mid round pick this year keeping in mind that a player available in the 4th or 5th round will likely be better than a 2nd rounder next year (but it doesnt look as sexy in the trade request)

ie: give 3, 28 get: 8, 16, ~50 - 60.

However if someone proposed this to me out of the blue I dont think I would take it...

Yeah ended up trading 3rd overall and 27 overall for 8th overall and 17 overall. Not ideal, but now I can take a goalie at 8 and feel comfortable with it, and still get two good players at 17 and 21.

Hey guys! It's my pick (I moved back to 8th and have 17 and 21 overall). All the goalies are there, Karlsson, Draisaitl and Laine.

Should I go goalie now or go Karlsson or a young forward?

How did the first 7 picks go? I always find someone takes price and holtby early and you could have been left with Crosby or mcdavid at 3.. but you did the trade and while I am not a fan of drafting dmen early not sure you can pass up on karlsson at 8th

Should add the other two guys you listed should not be considered this early in a dynasty draft so many more talents worth now over them. They are probably 3rd rounders if not 4th in leagues right now
