Good signing for the Sabres but I am surprised they didn't lock him up long-term.

Like this deal for the Sabres.

Lehner had his first real full season last year, if he can do it again this year than offer him a longer deal.

Hard to say who wanted the short term deal. At one point, I had read that the Sabres and new GM Botterill were trying to lock him up long-term.

Either way, I do like it for the Sabres.

They would be idiots if they were confident in his health/durability.

Normally I'd say this is a "prove it" deal, where if he fails they grab a UFA next summer; but it will be a lousy netminder UFA class in 2018, so if Lehner doesn't pan out the way they want then I'm not sure what they'll end up doing.

It may be a lousy UFA class, so it was probably Lehner that wanted to take advantage.
In Buffalo I think they end up having to go the trade route next season for someone like Korpisalo, Grubauer, Bernier, Halak/Greiss, Dell, or someone of the like.

Decent deal for the time being, but it leads to more questions than it answers.

Isn't the new Buffalo GM not sold on Lehner?

I heard this as well, and although the UFA class may stink teams are still overloaded in good 1B goalies it seems

Lehner also apparently loves Trump (which I find odd) and maybe GMBot hates Trump

Halak will be a UFA in 2018, and probably one of the three best, which shows how shallow of a class it will be. Anderson probably is the headliner, FWIW. I agree that they might try to pry away a younger type, but that will be costly and we all know that for every Schneider there's a Gerber, Toskala, or Garon.

I doubt Ottawa let's Anderson walk. Wouldn't surprise me at all if they bring him back for another couple years.

Bridge deal... As others have said at who's ask? Don't mind this for either and both have the potential to be burnt off it but I do wonder even if Lehner has an amazing season, and considering the market for goalie deals, would he actually warrant that much of a raise on a long term deal?

I think teams are just starting to realize that unless you're talking about an elite player, dropping a ton of term on goaltending is a risk not worth taking, especially given the number of "capable" goalies on the market that often times can be had for cheap. Every season a handful of backups emerge as potential suitors for starting gigs. I wouldn't be too worried if I was Buffalo.

The article below does not lead me to believe JB is totally sold on Lehner yet. Saying you have "no problem" going into the season with the guy, and that you liked what you saw from him 6 years ago in the AHL, doesn't exactly sound like a ringing endorsement. Nor does the 1-year deal.

Too bad they didn't lock him up long-term but understandable given his health history. I like the character and passion he brings to the table.
