Detroit should have just taken the 1 year arbitration deal and let him walk next year.

    A little Tatar sauce.

I'm surprised by the reaction. 75 goals in the past three seasons and his overall stats are very similar to Johnson's...except for the playoffs of course. I think Detroit paid market value and they bought UFA three years.

If detroit weren't sinking so fast I think the deal would be more palatable.

Tough for him to put up better numbers when the team seems to be circling the drain.

Who else is going to score for the wings if not Tatar ?
Consider Sim Hockey because guys who play shutdown minutes, deflect shots and clear creases build championships. Yet in fantasy they litter the unwanted UFA lists.

Biggest difference is Johnson is a quality 2nd center that can matchup with the other team's top line, play the PP, and kill penalties. Tatar is a winger who hasn't really taken "the next step". It's not a horrible deal for the Wings, but it's not good either.

Think he is slightly overpaid but scoring 29,21,25 and hardly missing a game the past 3 years helped his case. At least he still has some good prime years left in him and isn't signing as a 32 year old right at the end of his peak.

This. The problem isn't Tatar, it's that this once great team has been managed into oblivion. I liken him to Eberle - both are scorers and not much else and these types of players are frequently the scapegoats for fans.
