Panelists were saying they can make it work if they get McDavid+Draisaitl for ~20mill/yr. I don't think they'll sign Leon at 6.75mill.....This is going to be tough on them if they don't draft well.

Just on Chiarelli’s history with cap management with the Bruins, he’s seemed to already put himself in the hole with Lucic’s contract. That 6mill is going to look/be tough to work around.

But you could argue McDavid deserves more too.

I wonder how high the salary has to be to make teams walk away from a player like McDavid. The Pens and Hawks have managed this situation successfully.

I think you try to make the argument that at 13.5m it makes it difficult to bring in and maintain sufficient calibre teammates to remain competitive over the long term. You try to talk him down from the top numbers. The way he was feeling and talking at the Awards, I think he'll sign for below his initial ask of 13.5. Give him depth so he can compete long term for multiple cups.

I agree. I could see him settling for just under $12... $11.97 or $10.97 (with a heavy signing bonus) for a few years at least. That would also force Draisaitl down (to around $7-8...?).

Like someone mentioned above - gotta look at McDavid + Draisaitl combined. Anything under $20 would be really good.

I like the $20m for two players as well.
From a psychological standpoint, I think EDM should (wisely) do this by offering $7.5m to Draisaitl first.
For some short period of time, this makes Leon the highest paid player on the team, a big amount above their next highest paid player.

Then... you sign McDavid after that.

There's a correct order here... Draisaitl first - ooooooh, nice contract for him.
Then McDavid - ooooh, look at that big contract.

If they go McDavid first at $12.5m (say)... then Draisaitl getting $5m per year less (60% of McDavid) won't be viewed... nicely.

Good point, so the Pens are the exception. Kane and Toews combined are $21m, so perhaps even $20m combined will be too much unless the cap rises.

Agreed. But either way they order the signings - it won't be viewed nicely. I can't see Draisaitl settling for anything more than 25% less of McDavid's contract.

Gotta think McDavid takes some sort of discount forcing Draisaitl to take one as well (albeit less of a % on his actual cap hit)...

McDavid is going to be getting all the endorsements in the world as well. I don't believe a bank breaking salary is at the forefront of his worries - Stanley Cup Rings, however... He knows what he needs to do.

The question is - are their agents pushing them or will they push their agents?
