Devils considering Makar 1st overall

ESPN reports that NJ is strongly considering Cale Makar at 1st overall. Seems crazy to me.... thoughts???

I doubt they are considering anything at this point, they have their selection made already.

Makar 1st overall would be a huge risk for sure. Could end up being a good choice or a horrible mistake. There's less risk with Hischier and Patrick IMO but anything is possible this year.

Performance in the AJHL is not enough to convince me this is a good move. But, I also don't think this is the type of draft where you have to take the "consensus" top guy. If Makar is first on your board and you want him, take him.

Unfortunately, with the loss of Larsson, this feels like a reach based on need, which I think is a bad decision.

If I had the 1st pick... AND I wanted a defenseman... AND I knew somebody coveted Makar...
I'd definitely find a way to leak this information.

Then you trade down to 3 or 4 and take Heiskanen & gain some other asset.

The rumours about Makar have been all over the place the last week.
He's the one top 10 pick who has been discussed in the widest range.
And if you OWN a high pick, the one thing you WANT to do is dangle it to anybody that covets Makar and isn't sure where he'll go.

I'll say one thing, if the Makar-love is real, we'll definitely see somebody overpay to move up and take him.
Some GM should get a nice return if he is willing to just move down 3-4 spots and take a similar value player that falls to him.

I do believe... we'll see a top 6 pick traded.
I also believe.. that it will involve a desire to draft Makar.
But its going to be a deal made AT THAT TIME, when the SELECTION IS UP.
Anything prior... is just a big gamble that could blow-up if a GM isn't prepared to settle for whoever is there.

Agree entirely. Assuming there's any validity to the rumors of Vegas wanting to get into the top 2, if NJ ends up selecting Makar at 1st overall, that's a big blunder regardless of whether the pick itself pans out.

P.s. Wouldn't it be something if it was DAL in the 3 spot that was the source of this rumor/leak? Trying to drive up the price of their own pick if Vegas or someone else suddenly believes there's a chance one of Nico/Nolan will be left sitting there at 3. A bit bush league, but it'd give me a chuckle.

If they truly wanted Makar over the two forwards, they are doing themselves a serious misjustice if they didn't move back a couple spots and pick up another asset. I am pretty confident in saying that there are plenty of other teams who are a few spots back who would love one of Patrick or Hischier over Makar.

I'd guess Canucks, Rangers, Knights for sure.. heh.. especially the Rangers - they're hot after someone (my thought was Makar) and try to trade up to #3

Devils will trade down if they want Makar. I think it is just a play to get people who want Niko/Nolan to give them a call and see what they offer. In the end I doubt NJ moves the pick and they'll take one of Nico or Nolan
