Hes not getting any younger, but 40 is not out of the question for him, hes still the C and plays a lot of PP time. I however kept Vatanen over him in my keeper simply because of age even though Vats is out indefinitely.
Does last season was the beginning of the end, or just a bad season? Do you see him reach 40+ next year?

I was mentioning to somebody yesterday about defensemen and "career years".
Gio went for 56pts two seasons ago and I think a lot of people take that and go "Oh, here's a 50pt D-man for next 5 years".
Nah.
I'll do the same thing with Gio that I do with lots of defensemen.
1. Goals. He's a 7.5% career shooter and he's gonna get 150sog. That's 11g.
2. ESA. I think he actually had an off-year for ESA. His last four years of even-strength assists: 16, 25, 25, 20. Let's give him 22a.
3. PPA. His last four years: 13, 12, 10, 11. Let's give him 11 PPA (low-side, cause Dougie stealing time).
11 + 22 + 11. 44pts.
Seems about right.
CGY offense is young and improving.
Even if Dougie takes a bigger role, I think Gio is good for around 44pts per year.
(The 39pts was a tough ESA year - sometimes the forwards make magic on your outlets, sometimes they don't... you just have to normalize that stuff)
At that age, and with Calgary's rearguard depth chart it's hard to foresee a big rebound. That being said, he wasn't as bad as he was. I think he gets to about 40 on his own, but could do even better if the Flames offense clicks as a team.

There was a Keeping Karlsson podcast that talked about him. They delved into the stats and suggested that a rebound is likely.
