I'm getting old I guess, but I think that is kind of sad that some of the greatest names in pro hockey won't have their name on hockey's holy grail.

Wow, I knew this was a common practice by the NHL but I didn't think they were at this era. It shouldn't take away from the triumphant feeling of raising the cup but I guess when you have your day with the trophy with family and friends and you get to go over the names of the previous winners, those removed legends will be missed.

Personally they should make a second cup with the removed rings, so when you have the day with the cup you can request both. I think that would be the way to get around that part.Originally Posted by Bass56

it's not like there aren't still great names on the Cup.. Gretzky, Bossy, Lemieux, Hull, Roy, Brodeur. Most of those names being removed are recognized as much to Jake Guentzel as the 1920s names to Roy, when he won his 1st in '86.
It just has a different feel to it since those were the greats of our parents era (for the most part) or, the first televised generation. One day, Gretz will be removed and the big name on the Cup will be Quick, Toews, Crosby, Malkin, Doughty.

When the cup is awarded the players are too drunk to read anything on there anyway.

its not like the rings are tossed in teh trash...they're just not in the cup anymore. will always be there in teh HHOF for people to gaze on.

I doubt they are drunk "when" the cup is awarded, which is right after the game is over. That would mean they were drinking during or before the game. The last guy I remember hearing of playing drunk/high was Theo Fleury.
They should just make the trophy bigger. With the players of today being bigger and stronger, I'm sure they handle some extra weight. If they aren't strong enough to raise the cup, they can go play soccer or take up synchronized diving. lol
