Question Who to Drop: Martin, Petry or Del Zotto? Points Only

    Hey All,

I've just gotten Subban in a trade and need to drop my worst defenceman. Which one do you think I should drop? I'm leaning Martin because of age, but Del Zotto is hurt a lot. However I do have 3 IR slots, so that's not the end of the world.

    Petry is an easy keep.

And I'd rather keep Del Zotto over Martin.

It's basically is Del Zotto + Waiver wire pickup when hurt better than Martin.

Depending on how deep your league is Martin might end up being the guy you pick up when Del Zotto gets hurt? lol

    Exactly.

    Martin is the drop here

Not sure I agree with others that Del Zotto is a keep over Martin, since say what you want about Martin but at least he's not a healthy scratch and Del Zotto was on multiple occasions last season. Then again, Martin is getting up there in years so who knows how long he can keep his spot. Still though, I'd peg Martin as the lesser of two evils for the time being.

I would drop Martin, ageing player on an ageing team, who know what they will look like next year.

Although MDZ is a UFA and might sign somewhere that does not work well for him...

I'd drop Del Zotto. I'd rather hold Martin over MDZ.

In terms of numbers, here is how they both compare over the past 3 seasons:

    Martin:
    *233 games played (avg. of 78 per year; 74, 78, 81)
    *66 total points
*scoring at .283 points per game
*has been very consistent: 20pts in 74gms and 20 in 78, 26 in 81 this year

    MDZ:
    *167 games played (avg. of 56 per year: 64, 52, 51)
*63 total points (keep in mind he had a 32 point campaign during those 64 games)
*scoring at .377 points per game
    *scoring varies: 32pts in 64gms, 13 in 52 and 18 in 51 this year

In light of this and using this past year's numbers, I would much rather roster a guy that can give me 18pts in 51 games (.353ppg) and stream the rest over one that gives me 26 in 81 (.321ppg). The 8 point difference in 30 extra games is equal to .267 pts/game... I'm pretty sure you can find and stream D that can do a tad better than that! Should MDZ play an entire season like Martin tends to do, then his average output per game should help him outpoint Martin.

Then again, this can also change things up a bit as MDZ has been playing in Philly over the past 3 seasons...

Can you wait and see what happens in the next few weeks/months before making your decision?

The problem arises when - as happened this year - Del Zotto was scratched at irregular intervals, so he's not an ideal streaming option.

Very true about the scratches and not being able to stream a player who is benched rather than injured. However, in Del Zotto's case last year, out of 31 missed games, 12 came from the first 12 games of the season after he injured his knee in a preseason game and another 9 in Jan-Feb after sustaining a lower leg injury from blocking a shot. That's 21 games lost to injuries which is more than a quarter of the season. The 10 remaining games come from scratches mostly but I'm certain there's a few due to ailments here and there. So in theory, we know this guy is a magnet for injuries
