Wow!!! I can't understand how he did it but Joe Thornton played most of the series vs Edmonton with a torn ACL and MCL! Like we aren't talking about a deep bruise, a sprain or even a fracture... we're talking about torn ligaments!!

I skated with a torn ACL for a season. Halfway through some games, I would just fall down. Stereotypical tripping over the blueline type stuff. I could run without much trouble, but had some lateral mobility limitations! All that said, to play at that level with a torn ACL and MCL, that's a pretty gutsy performance from Jumbo Joe. Well done oh bearded wonder.

Gutsy - there is probably a small part of him that is glad San Jose didn't move on - the discomfort must have been something else (when whatever he was taking wore off)

It makes me feel bad for him, since you know a lot of it was him sensing this was one of his final shots at a Cup.

Well I guess if one of us went to see our doctors and told them we were doing physical activity with a similar injury, they would tell us to stop. But considering Thornton is surrounded by medical experts, I'm sure that they took every precaution and evaluated the risks prior to giving him the green light. I think the biggest issues here were him not playing as well as he should (but he was still better than most on that team) and him having to play through some serious pain when doing certain motions (quick direction changes, being bumped off the puck, ...). Then again, maybe he downplayed the pain to get a chance at helping his team go further in the playoffs... Who knows.
I mean, this is not like back in the days when Rocket Richard would move all the furniture out of his house during moving day and then play at night with a possible hernia while not telling management. Ahhh, the good ol' days!
