Default M.Phillips - Gaudreau or Byron

for dynasty leaguers here may be a hidden gem that nobody has taken yet, Calgary Flames have another highly skilled undersized prospect by the name of Matthew Phillips 5'6 141lbs, some have compared him to a Johnny Hockey-lite, some say he'll be more of a smaller energy guy like Paul Byron, even JH himself has taken an interest to the kid, thoughts?

Most likely neither. Maybe he'll have Byron-like success after many years trying to make it.

I hope he turns out like Gaudreau, but as Eric says he has a long way to go. Phillips is actually even smaller than Gaudreau if you believe JH's stats. They're similar players in that their best attributes are hockey sense, great hands, and release, as opposed to breakaway speed which you'd expect from the little guys. Phillips plays with more attitude than Gaudreau, but that may be due to playing Junior instead of college hockey. Also, Phillips was 10th in league scoring this year whereas Gaudreau was 6th in his 18-year old season going up against older players. Unless you can sit on him for a few years and have room in your minors, I'd pass on him for now.

Comparisons are always going to be made just due to stature but he's a lstill my way away from being JH IMO

I took over a team that has him on the junior squad. He has some solid potential, but I don't think I would have him on my team if he wasn't already there. I may have to drop him in the offseason to make room for new draft picks anyways.

He's decent to own in a dynasty league because he has potential and his value can grow over time. I usually end up trading this type of prospect though if someone thinks too highly of him or when teams go into rebuild mode.
