Default Question of the Day: NHL/AHL Playoff Rosters and eligibility

Can some one answer this one:

I'm trying to figure out if there are any restrictions on guys moving from
the NHL clubs they are now on back to their AHL clubs for
the playoffs. As an example, if the Red Wings don't
make the playoffs does Mantha get sent back down for the AHL
playoffs? If an NHL team is eliminated in the first round,
can they send their AHL call ups back for the AHL playoffs.

I believe players need to be on AHL roster on some pre-defined date to be playoff eligible in the AHL. Teams usually do a paper transaction to make players eligible just in case. i believe the date is on trade deadline actually since I remember hearing some comments from GMs at that time.

I know a few years back Jamie Benn went down to the AHL for the playoffs after being in the NHL all year. So ya they can do it but I don't know the details.

Good question Bubba. I tried searching for the answer and came up with some vague paragraphs that were hard to apply. I read something about having to be on an AHL roster as of the end of Feb. Hopefully, someone has the info and can pass it on to us!
