Do the Blackhawks really still own his rights? It's been almost 6 years since they drafted him and he hasn't signed his ELC since that time. The best information I was able to find, you only have European player's rights for 2 years after the draft based on the 2005 CBA (which I think was still valid when Shalunov was drafted in 2011 - the next CBA came in 2013). Not sure where I read it or heard it but apparently the Wild are thinking about bringing Joel Ericsson Ekman back possibly. Apparently there is a deadline they have to bring him back before so not sure if that idea has come and gone.

Jan 15 deadline came/went for MIN to recall Joel Eriksson Ek. He'll finish season in SWE. Eligible for NHL return (playoffs?) once SHL done.

This is assuming he wants to leave school early (after his first year). He doesn't have a contract yet.

Shalunov's KHL team doesn't look like they are going to make their playoffs.
