    Default Is Markstrom for Real?

I basically had to settle for the Vancouver duo as my #2 in the draft. Saying that I'm obviously pleasantly surprised with them (especially Markstrom) so far but am still pretty leery with my expectations. Will Vancouver continue to over perform and become a fringe playoff team like Arizona teams in the past?

Expecting him to keep up what he is doing so far, is very unrealistic. Having him turn in a fantasy relevant season is very possible. Something like a Varlamov lite from the last few years. Respectable numbers from a starter on a bad team as long as he can hold off Miller.

Put me in the camp of saying he is for real, as he's at the age where goalies tend to figure it out.

Remember that this guy was once more or less universally touted as the best goaltending prospect in the world and the next big thing (think Vasilevski if you want a recent comparable in terms of hype). The potential and talent have always been there but, as Rizzy mentioned, it just took him a while to put it all together and being moved from organization to organization didn't help his development. I fully expect him to, at the very least, become a respectable NHL starting goalie. He's only 25, which is still young by goalie standards.

He is for real, but Vancouver as a team may not be.

That is what I was going to say! But more along the lines of no way Van is for real.

My thinking is that they were supposed to be be one of the worst teams in the league this year, and if they end up being somewhere below average but not terrible, there is some hope there for Markstrom. Basically it looks like Vancouver & Detroit may be better than the masses thought.

Would you prefer him over Greiss as your backup goalie for this season?

I am more convinced that Greiss ends up being more relevant by the end of the season than Markstrom...

Vancouver is playing a slow, defensive game this year. Might not be good for wins but I think they'll do a decent job in preventing GAs this year. Though with Miller back, Markstrom should see fewer games down the road.
