Keeper League Setup Advice please

Hi all.

I'm starting a new keeper this year. I'm going to try fantrax for the first time. It will be head to head, with these cats: g,a, hit, block. (g and a are weighted 2-1) for goalies, w, so, sv%,GAA.

I have 16 managers. I wanted to go with 4C, 4LW, 4RW, 6 D, 2G, 5 bench, and 10 IR.

With 16 teams, I'm concerned I'll have a goalie drought on my hands. But if I drop it to one goalie, I'm worried goalies won't be worth that much relative to skaters.

Any thoughts on optimum roster size for a 16 team league would be most appreciated.

you should be fine with 2 goalie spots - the question is how many minimum goalie starts you require (I would say 3).

In my league's scoring categories, the top goalie had 97 points (Holtby) and second had 81 (Crawford). 19th had 50.4 (Niemi) and 39th place had 25.5. There are usually around 17 truly useful and reliable goalies. Then there are about 15 more who are "adequate". I think you can go with two goalies. I know you're not in a points system, but the ranking/value in general is the same for the purpose of this answer

With 16 teams and two active goalie slots, you WILL have a goalie drought. Most teams will want at least 3 goalies (48) and even with my rudimentary math skills, I can see a goalie drought clear as day. Only 30 NHL starting gigs and 30 back-ups, but as we all know, not all back-up jobs are created equal with the Holtby's and Schneider's eating up nearly 70 starts each.

Two goalie slots could work out if everyone took just 3 goalies each and equally doled out the quality starters, but some guys will get greedy and want 3 x starters, so some teams will end up on the short end of the goalies games played.

I'd prefer only one goalie slot even though it's not ideal. With 1 goalie slot, at least theoretically, nearly everyone will have an opportunity to have at least 2 starters.

Instead of 82 GP per goalie slot maybe knock it down... say to 70

You could also cap the number of goalies each team can roster. Keep it 2 active spots but set it up so that teams can only have a max of 3 or 4 goalies on their roster (including bench spots).
