I agree, Sign him right f'n now!

I'm good with anything under 7. His production is not due to Kane. They played great together but Panarin is an offensive force.

I think he'd be an immediate bargain at 6.1.

One key is 6 years would put him at age 31 when this expires, which is a big benefit to the Hawks as that way he'll be there for the prime of his career but won't be on the books when he's likely to see his production slow. I agree that in today's NHL a player normally doesn't get handed this kind of money and term right away; but we have to remember this is a 24 (25 next month) year old player who's not comparable to most who are coming off their first contract.

I remember another mid-20s Russian that was once viewed as "all that".
Teams gotta be careful shelling out... some players are really good fits on a line.
It doesn't necessarily mean they can be a dynamic player off that line.

If you're the Hawks, you are paying Panarin 6 mil/year to play on Kane's line. He will be well worth the money in that situation.

I agree that it is a risky proposition for another team to pay him 6 mil/year. I think it would still be worth it, but there is uncertainty there unlike the Hawks paying him and lashing him to Kane for the next 6 years.

    He's not Semin.

It's telling that the Hawks fans that watch a majority of his game don't have a problem with signing him to the contract. Edit- Hawk fans are actually calling for the Hawks to sign him right away at something in the 6-range and that it would be a steal. The Seabrook contract will be ugly. Giving Panarin a little over 6 to play with Kane or Toews for the next 6 years will be excellent.

If Panarin's numbers from last season become the norm for him, a 6x6 contract will be a massive discount. If he performs under that (say around 60+ points), it'll be about right. I agree with DN, Panarin is not Semin. He's got passion and effort to go with the talent. I wouldn't be afraid of a deal like that for him.

Ummmm, I'm not sure you did the math before posting this, as Semin's production for the six seasons between when he was age 24 (which Panarin is now) and age 30 amounted to a total of 357 points in 389 games. Yeah, he was not the best locker room presence, but I think the Hawks would gladly take that from Panarin for $36M.

And was more so using Cheechoo and Kunitz to show what playing with elite talent can do. I'm interested to see how he does this year, but I'm very uneasy talking over 6mil long term at this point
Over the next 6 years, when would he have to do it away from Kane? It doesn't matter what he can do with other players. It matters what he does with/for Kane. Prove it another year? Sure I can see that. But name the last middle 6 player to play with Kane and get 65 points. Show me the last time Kane scored over a 100 points. You can't do either because they don't exist.

Hossa and Saad? Played with Toews
Sharp? Not sure I'd call Sharp of two years ago a middle six player.

So there's your candidates. That's it.

When you want money AND term you should have a resume longer than one season.

One thing I'll say is I had Panarin earmarked for a drop in production, but boy oh boy if he doesn't get this deal done I'm thinking he might just equal or even exceed what he did in 2015-16. After all, the kind of player who has the stones to ask for this kind of deal after one season is the same kind of player who'd do whatever he could to make the team regret not giving it to him.

I dunno, that’s a lot for 1 yr. They’ll be hit with the bonus penalty too for his yr1 of the new contract. I’d be glad to give him 6mill/3yrs, and after that 3rd yr say, “ok, thank-you, you can hit FA now” if he’s performed.

Dude has talent, you can tell because he can actually play with Kane. It’s hard finding that talent that can play with an elite talent, especially one so East-West moving of Kane. But I’m not doing 6yrs on a winger of 1 season.

Or levy a NMC for 4mill/6yrs and threaten him with if he doesn’t sign that contract he’ll likely move from Chicago to Las Vegas at the expansion.

Hawks wouldn't do that either. Panarin is a better fit for their team and they have 3 dmen in Chicago that are going to be there for a while. Plus, Forsling is going to be a top 4 dman soon and you have enough depth for the 3rd pairing with TVR, Pokka, and Gus. Maybe if they hadn't signed Seabrook to that ridiculous contract or if they could move him. Oh yeah- they gave him a NMC too like nearly everyone else on the team.
