I had drafted him with my last pick in one of my 2 leagues and once FA opened up replaced him with a 2nd tight end for my team as it was really looking like it was going to be RB by committee for the Ravens but it is a surprise. I had him last season on one of my teams as well and I seem to remember him coming in quite handy a few weeks.

Sorry, when I said re-signed, I meant with Baltimore. Which he now has. Backfield is a mess, Allen has the most secure role, Dixon has the highest upside.

Was he making that much money that they simply didn't want to pay him whatever he was making? Is that why they cut him, and then re-sign him (I assume to a cheaper contract)?

He signed a 3 year 9M contract in 2015 with 3M guaranteed to my understanding. So cutting him they save 6M minus what they are paying him when they resigned him. The way his contract works it was a 900K base last season with a 700K signing bonus applied to each of the 3 years(which is guaranteed) so he's making 700K for sure this season + whatever else.
