    Default Next Bergeron/Giroux FOW beast?

    Hey Guys,

i'm just wondering, who could be the next solid Bergeron/Giroux type good (or great) point producer, who also beast at the faceoff dot. For me hard to evaluate young prospects, who can win faceoffs. Not a lot of junior league tracking (or publishing) faceoff stats. Plus some of young prospects are converted to wing (for example Larkin) when they arrive to the big league or they stay at C, but they are very bad at faceoff dot in their early years (MacK, RNH, Scheifele).

So who are your best bets? (They can be prospects or young NHL players also.)

The best you can do is look at top prospects who are centers. Guys like Matthews, Strome, Zacha, Barzal, Dubois...

I think the three you named in your example (MacK, RNH, Scheifele) are prime candidates who could take it to another level this year. Very few high end two-way centres (such as Bergeron and Kesler) get that way until a few years into their careers, as it takes several years to become proficient at taking draws against NHL centres.

Pretty much. Go for guys that will probably play 20 mins in the NHL and don't have a record of shifting to wing (look at their height and weight as well, as many smaller guys get moved to the wings in the NHL). First name that came to mind was Matthews as he has that two way game. Nolan Patrick next year has been compared by Craig Button to Toews, for what it's worth.

I agree with the group here. The best you can really do is look at guys who should be stud 20+min a night centres. Though there are a few great options for 2nd tier fw beasts. Kopitar and Kesler regularly clear 800fw. Would be an interesting thing to look at the career arcs of Bergeron/Giroux etc to see if there's any kind of pattern these big fw centres follow.

I believe Monahan has another level that will increase his scoring and FOW. When he hits his prime I think he will be Bergeron 2.0

Personally, and unless it's a face off only pool, I'd keep looking at best possible return/player available. No almost every format I can think of guys would trade Bergeron or Giroux for an Ovechkin or Kane. Yeah it's good to be aware of peripheral stats but face offs are usually easy to get off the waiver wire

Monahan and Horvat are the next FOW beasts in a few more years.

Monahan would be the best bet imo. I don't think he has Girouxs points upside though, more Bergeron. 65 points, 1000 FOW

    For me it's Barkov.....

Now for some insight on predicting future results

I think FOW or success in general on the dot are much more of a team/line based stat....certain styles or philosophy of game lend themselves to winning faceoffs....

Teams that play a solid possession game always perform well at the face off circle......put RNH on the St. Louis Blues with Steen on his left and Backes on his right he's 50-52% guy if not better instead of a 44% guy.....

Heavy sticked wingers that are strong and big bodied make a difference....

There are definitely some guys that have a true talent for it like Bergeron toews giroux Kopitar ROR though

If you're not looking for upcoming centers like Matthews, Strome etc., I think these guys have the potential to be the next Giroux/Bergeron:

    - Monahan
    - Horvat
    - Barkov
    - Scheifele

you need to find a 1st line center that will be taking offensive + defensive zone faceoffs, i.e two way players

Monahan could be a 1000+ guy soon

Matthews could in a few years if he develops as expected

i wouldn't put horvat in the 1000+ list as i don't see him as anything more than a top 2 C at best.

Lots of potential options but really hard to judge given it comes down to the coach on who he wants taking the draws in different situations.
