I'm not sure about the signing part, but I don't think he has upped his game that much from his first stint in the NHL. He has been a good (not great) KHL player especially in the past 2 seasons on his all-star St-P. SKA squad (playing with Kovy, Shipachev, Panarin the year before.... heck even Steve Moses!). He was an average AHLer with limited NHL exposure so I doubt he comes back (if he does) and makes any sort of impact.
Even in optimal situations (aka top linemates), I doubt he breaks 45pts in the NHL.
