Goalie Strategy - Ward/Lack v. ?
For the team in my signature. I currently have Varlamov and Lack in a 16 team salary cap league where goalies matter. I’ve already tried to get Pickard but to no avail.
1. I’m considering a strategy where I choose an NHL team and sign, trade, and draft that teams top 3-4 goalies in the system –Good strategy? Bad strategy?
2. Out of the following goalie groups, which do you prefer assuming that my team starts to compete in 17-18?
CAR: Ward (free agency), Lack (already on my roster), and Nedeljkovic (draftable)
ARI: Smith (via trade), Domingue (free agency)
NYR: Lundqvist, (via trade), Raanta (free agency), Shesterkin (draftable)
BUF: Lehner (via trade), Nilsson (free agency), L. Ullmark (via trade), Kosdorf (draftable)
EDM: Talbot (via trade), Brossoit (via trade), Gustavsson (free agency)
DAL: Niemi (free agency), Lehtonen (free agency), Desrosiers (draftable)
BOS: Rask (via trade), Khudobin (free agency), Vladar (draftable)
I suspect the other taken goalies are not available by their GM’s, hence the limited list.
The easiest option is trade Varlamov for roster support, keep Lack, pickup Ward, and draft Nedelkovic – doesn’t cost me assets and ensures starts. Everything else requires giving up assets in a trade, which is fine and no one is singing the praises of Ward/Lack these days.
Feedback please! Thanks in advance!
