Matthews I think would have battles Eichel for #2 overall. But McD is still a step ahead of both. He and Eichel have little to no gap between the two imo.

Although I prefer Eichel to Matthews, I too would peg Matthews as being closer to Eichel rather than McDavid. From a current NHLer perspective, as others have illutrated, just to list a few names we have:
Elite: Crosby, Ovechkin, Benn (could be moved down a tier but his all-around games makes him a top-dog IMO)...
All-Stars: Tavares, Seguin, Kane (could be moved up if he continues as this year's pace)...
Stars: Toews, Kopitar, Stamkos (could return to a higher tier IMO)...
Impact players: Pacioretty, Johansen, T. Johnson (I think he will bounce back to 65-70something pts)...
I would say McDavid could potentially end up in the Elite category and Matthews and Eichel could end up in the All-Star at best or Star brackets at worst.

If Matthews were anywhere close to McDavid, then we wouldn't have had this "Matthews or Laine?" debate that we've all been enjoying for the past several months.

By the time the version of Matthews is close to Toews, the version of Crosby won't be what he is now. Still awesome, but not as good.

It's just like McEichel. I don't even think it's close between Matthews and Laine -- when it comes to REAL hockey.

I don't think he'll be in the McD tier when all things are said and done. I will however give him more credit offensively than Toews/Kopitar......from what I've heard, he's pegged for Stamkos numbers-ish ...I think he'll be a pure sniper..45G40A guy....
Hockey Pools? Too many to mention. Points only, salary cap and dynasty.
McDavid is miles ahead when it comes to fantasy upside. Matthews is going to be an awesome player but the hype around him is more about his total package and NHL readiness and less about his generational offensive skill (because he doesn't possess generational skill).
Matthews is a stud, no doubt, but there's a reason why some people think McDavid is the most talented player since Gretzky/Mario.
pretty much this. most years the top pick is expected to be a top line forward who presumably will be a perennial all star. once in a while if you suck in the right year, youll get a generational talent like mcdavid. its not a given the pick will be a top line forward either though.
One day I will quit fantasy hockey, today is not that day.
He set the NTDP scoring record by beating Kane's totals so I give him much higher abilities than Toews/Kopi and could see him scoring 100 at some point, still a clear step behind McDavid though.

I think Matthews is almost getting underrated at this point. I'm not sure people realize how good he is offensively.
Is he McDavid good? No, McDavid is something else entirely, but with McDavid you're talking about a Crosby, Lemieux, Gretzky level talent. The kind of talented that comes around to rarely. Any player compared to him is going to look worse. I mean were talking about a guy who put up over a PPG in his rookie season. That's like almost unheard of nowadays.
But he's definitely going to be a PPG plus player. Guy is seriously good. The NTDP record, he crushed the USHL in his time their, he basically was one of the most prolific scorers in the NLA in hi srookie season (that's seriously impressive). I think he's going to be better than Eichel.

I own McDavid, Eichel and 1st overall pick so Matthews. Ive had several offers for Eichel and 1st overall pick, the offers are significantly better for 1st overall vs. Eichel but i chalk that up to Matthews being a Leafer. I am considering trading Matthews for an overpayment that will make my team better overall. But know that i think of it I am def going to wait until the World Cup in Sept to see how Matthews plays with McDavid/Eichel and against the best in the world, before trading away that 1st overall.
Today I rank them
McDavid 100 pts while making everyone around him better
Eichel/Matthews 80-90pts
Did i ever pick a great time to rebuild and luck into these 3!!!!!

i did quite a bit of research and was able to come up with this to answer the thread title's question
There's no comparison to McDavid here. I'm really repeating what others have already said.
I do think in 2-3 years we'll start to see him make a gap above Eichel though. Maybe not directly related to points, but as a complete all-round player, He's going to be better...
I'll put him in a 95pt career year, and float around 85 most years.
