Don Sweeney hangs up the phone, disgruntled and annoyed with his fellow GM's. He has been asking around for a defenseman but nobody will take him seriously. The responses he gets are either, "But didn't you just trade Hamilton" or ridiculous offers that he has no intent on accepting. Barely anyone will take him seriously in his search for quality defenders. So, after acquiring Dan Girardi for Miller and Vatrano, Sweeney walks up to the draft podium. He looks at his current defensive group and even he knows Girardi can't fully fix it. He knows he needs an impact player, someone who can score from the backup but play tight defense. He knows he needs someone who the fans and coaches will love. Approaching the microphone, Sweeney announces his pick.

"With the 14th overall pick, the Boston Bruins select...Jake Bean"

After a long wait, Chuck Fletcher strolls to the podium. After thanking Buffalo for hosting this year draft and, even more importantly he realizes how much the Wild need offense, he announces:

"With the 15th overall pick in the 2016 NHL draft, the Minnesota Wild are happy to select from University of Wisconsin center Luke Kunin.

Kenny Holland walks to the podium with Tyler Wright, the Director of Amateur Scouting for the Red Wings, and thanks the city of Buffalo for hosting the draft. He also congratulates the Penguins for the Stanley Cup. After that, he drafts a guy that will help fill the void created with the loss of Datsyuk:

"The Detroit Red Wings are proud to select, from Team Russia U18, German Rubstov!"

David Poile, after being foiled in his efforts to move up in the draft to get the star forward he really wants, walks up to the podium, on the outside looking as calm as always. He thanks the Buffalo fans, congratulates the Penguins on their cup win, and says a word to the handful of Predators fans at their official draft party in someone's mother's basement.


"With the 17th overall pick, the Nashville Predators select, from the Val-d'Or Foreurs, Julien Gauthier"


This, in an effort to disprove that Nashville can only draft good defensemen, and after having been scared off of College players due to Vesey.

Ron Hextall of the Flyers, walks to the podium. "With the 18th pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, the Philadelphia Flyers select, from Boston University, Charlie McAvoy."

The TSN War Room interviewed Hextall following.
"Well, we know we've selected defensemen with our 1st round pick for 3 or 4 straight years now... and we'll do it again. We think Charlie was the best player available and we really liked what we saw with Shayne this year and to get that upside in a right-handed defensemen will really fit with the group we have rising up."

And so it continues.

Arizona continues to beef up a very thin defense prospect group, selecting Dante Fabbro from the Penticton Vees of the BCHL.

The Carolina Hurricanes walk back up to the podium. Their goal with their first round picks has been to beef up their offense. After taking their future captain and heart and soul player, Michael McLeod with their first pick, they realize they need a big winger to go along with their mostly skill players. Therefore, the Hurricanes select, from the London Knights...

They hold a prayer vigil immediately after making the pick with the hopes that he doesn't blindside anyone in the head and laugh about it on the way up to the podium.

The Winnipeg Jets are a team loaded with talent in the prospect pool and have one of the deepest (if not deepest) crop in the league. That being said, there are two glaring needs for this franchise. With the #2 pick, the Jets were able to partly address that need with Laine and adding a top end scoring talent. However, there is still a glaring hole on the future top-6 of the Jets as they still lack depth in scoring options on the wing in the top-6. Lots of solid prospects with the majority able to fill the gaps on the 3rd & 4th lines but Connor and Scheifele need more options.

Dale Tallon accompanies brand new GM Tom Rowe to the podium, thanks the Buffalo Sabers for hosting the 2016 draft and congratulates the Pittsburgh Penguins for the Stanley Cup. He gives over the reigns of the future powerhouse to Tom Rowe, who is proud to select with the 23rd overall pick:

Ducks GM Bob Murray walks up to the podium with new Head Coach Randy Carlyle, Director of Player Development Todd Marchant, Special Assignment Coach of Player Development Scott Niedermayer, Special Assignment Scout & Consultant to General Manager Dave Nonis. Farm Team San Diego Gulls Head Coach Dallas Eakins is seen getting off his Elipitical and carrying a Fruit and Veggie tray up to the podium, but is misdirected by Carlyle to the washrooms and promptly locked in there until Sunday. Bob Murray passes the mic to Scott Niedermayer who thanks Buffalo for hosting the 2016 draft, congratulates Pittsburgh for winning the Stanley Cup and then says The Anaheim Ducks are proud to select from the Erie Otters Alex DeBrincat.

If looks could kill, the Ducks' Bob Murray would be deader than dead under the withering glare of Stars GM Jim Nill. But the best GM in sports is not one to let disappointments distract him for building the next model franchise. With that in mind and the fact that there are no goalies worth the 25th pick to address that glaring need, the Stars GM relies on his European connections built during his time in MoTown and heads to Sweden for the pick.

With the 25th pick of the 1st round the Dallas Stars select Rasmus Asplund.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are proud to select Tyler Benson from the Vancouver Giants.

We believe that though Benson struggled with injuries, he's a high skill player that can play in the top 6 in the future. We think we're getting a really good player here.

Doug Armstrong, Ken Hitchcock and his future replacement Mike Yeo approach the podium. Seems like hitch and Yeo can't decide who they wana take. Reports are out that Hitch heard saying "it's still my f---ing team damn it!". after a brief time out called upon by the commissioner everyone collects themselves and walks up to the podium. Doug starts by thanking the lovely city of Buffalo for hosting the draft and doing a tremendous job putting this event and the combine on together. He also says he'd like to say hi to all the fans back home and thanks for the support after another let down year. But hey.........we beat Chicago finally. Martin broduer appears out of nowhere and also would like to send a shout out to the draft party being held at their favorite hooters location in downtown st.lou. Then for shits and gigs they have hitch and Yeo together say " the st.louis Blues are proud to select with the 28th overall pick in the 2016 entry draft, from the university of Connecticut, TAGE THOMPSON!!!!!!!!!!"
