    Does he join the NHL?

Anyone know if he's locked up in the KHL?

Would he be a starter somewhere in the NHL if he did make his way over?

will be at least another year before he comes over... even IF he did next season will there be many slots available? Bishop, Bernier. Mason, Elliott, Greiss, Neuvirth, Markstrom, Darling would all potentially be on the market. Though not all of those will hit the market they are all potentially better options than Koskinen would be

It's certainly possible he comes over even if the goalie market is always flooded. I don't think he gets handed a #1 job though.

Nobody's giving him a starter's job, but if he came over I guess he could steal one but even that is hard to imagine. One thing he has going for him is he was once considered a big time goalie prospect and then he sort of disappeared after the Isles cut bait. He might just be a late bloomer like another big man Ben Bishop. He's had great numbers in the KHL and for Finland. A huge number of scouts and GM types go to the WHC every year and you always see 5-10 signings as a result. I'm sure if he's contractually able, someone will offer him some sort of deal.

This is interesting. He's a big guy and was considered a big time prospect at one point. It normally takes goalies a while to gain traction but where it gets more interesting is that IMO there aren't a ton of spots available but conversely it seems more teams are either doing a 1a/1b tandem or maybe what you would call a 1b/2a so it could go in any direction for a guy like koskinen

    FYI, from last week

    https://twitter.com/akaRCN/status/735291352456384512

Brad Treliving said Finnish G Mikko Koskinen just re-signed in the KHL for what would be the equivalent of ~$5M US tax free per yr ×2 yrs.

    good find axeman .

only info I can add is isles have his nhl rights up until age 27 which is why I think he's allowed to play in the world cup in sept (I'm assuming only nhl'ers allowed in tourney right ?)

I am not sure what the deal is with the World Cup and their roster eligibility. That was the only piece of info I could find on a new deal for Koskinen in the KHL.

I am trying to find out just how long the Islanders actually own his right but having a hard time finding it (short of opening up the actual CBA and putting my lawyer hat on to search that). I believe once he turns 27, he becomes an UFA but just looking to confirm that.

he still shows up on their ''in the system'' section of official isles nhl page - he turns 28 july 18 so perhaps thats when they lose his rights .I cant recall where I read that isles retain his rights up to age 27 but it seems to make sense considering they still have his rights .

@chrispudsey @HBomb1982 Technically yes, until June 30th. But he's UFA as of July 1st & re-signed in KHL.

This is the problem with goalies. There's 60 spots in the NHL and only about half of them are fantasy-relevant. There's like 100 non-NHL goalies out there that could easily play a backup role. Opportunity >>> talent most of the time.

Based on Koskinen's KHL salary he should stay there.

Considering what he will make in the NHL, I'd be shocked if he didn't stay.
