Default Bet you saw this coming....

Philadelphia 76ers are the first team in the four major north American sports to sell advertising space on their jerseys.

Stub hub apparently bought the space for 5 million per season. It's not as bad as you might think but it's there nonetheless.

It's coming to the NHL. Just a matter of when.

Meh. I don't really care. Boards used to be blank. Ice used to be blank. Arenas weren't always sponsored. There's extra adds added to the glass now for TV viewers. If it adds to HRR and therefore higher cap, I'm all for it. If it doesn't, well, I still don't care. I hope when hockey does it you'll still be able to buy jerseys without the adds, but if you can't it probably won't stop me. Not something worth getting outraged about, for me anyways.

Not a big deal as long as the advertising is kept discreet.
If it gets to the level of advertising on European teams - it becomes a bit of a distraction for me.

You'd think they could have found a better team to advertise on. Maybe that's why the price tag is so cheap, or maybe the better teams didn't want to do it. LOL!

No way a team like the Lakers, Golden State, Celtics, or any big team would do this. A small team where $5mill is a small price for Stubhub, but that’s a pretty good players salary for the 76ers.

The next thing is, when will they be on jerseys I buy? That’s where I draw the line.

This is low. They wait this long just to get one player's salary out of it?

And I still don't understand why pro sports legitimizes Stubhub, a company that basically takes their tickets (that for most teams would have sold anyway) and jacks up the prices. I'd be fighting Stubhub tooth and nail if I owned a team. Dumb.

I, for one, would never buy a jersey with an advertisement on it... let's hope that's not the next step.

Meh. I think the size I read is 2.5"x2.5".
As long as the colour scheme matches the team colours, I'm fine with it.
The little StubHub patch I saw yesterday blended right in with the Sixers logo.

It's unavoidable - to be honest.
With people switching away from many TV advertisement source (i.e. network/cable TV) over to paying to NOT have ads... they'll now get them re-thrust back in their faces.

It also reminds me of the hockey lockout.
So many people were like "yada, yada, I'm not watching a hockey game ever again... I'm on strike... I won't support the league..."
Whatever. You like it, you'll put up with it.

I can accept this is where the sports world is heading.
Obv, the English Premier League isn't lacking for passion in their fanbase - so here we go...

It was only a matter of time. I don't like it any more than the next guy but it's no big surprise that owners want free $

I just wish this meant tickets prices went down because of this.. But that is a pipe dream.. These owners are lining their pockets even more..

There are teams in Europe which changed their colors for some money, so think about the Bruins playing in red and white with a Coca Cola logo instead of the B. I hope this will never come to the NHL.

Yeah it's bound to happen. As expected they're slowly dipping their toes in to get everyone desensitized before going all-in.

Saw a story on this the other day. Apparently, half the money goes to the team, and the other half to the players. Half of the players money then goes into a revenue-sharing pool. Overall, the players getting the money will increase the salary cap allowing for more players to sign for more money. So the players would be making money off this as well.

I don't like the idea of ads on jerseys in and of itself...but if it helps improve league revenues and keeps the cap going up then I guess count me in. The AHL has pretty tasteful ads on jerseys that you barely notice. As long as it's that and nothing even remotely like the Euro leagues then it's fine.
