Suppose EDM deals both RNH and Eberle for dmen (separate 1-for-1 deals) that leaves two big holes up front so they still have needs a F. Not every signing has to directly address team needs. They just have to make the team better in some capacity.

Exactly. This could very well indirectly help fix the D by allowing them to move other assets that can address the D issue. The D will get addressed in time.

No it doesn't. As I mentioned, suppose they move two key forwards in trades for dmen. That creates holes up front, one of which can be filled by a forward at the draft.

I don't think it "seals the deal" but I think it's likely even if this signing did not take place. I think the Oilers are just trying to make their overall team better from all avenues and give themselves the best opportunities to make whatever moves they feel necessary as they acquire various assets.
