Scanning back through this thread I was reminded about Mattias Backman. He did end up signing a one-year contract to remain with the Texas Stars. We'll see how that all plays out and whether or not we're going to be talking about him possibly heading back to Sweden again next summer. He's not a breakout candidate this season, but he could factor in during call-ups depending on circumstances.

I thought I'd take a look at Jake Gardiner as a potential breakout candidate and I liked what I saw. He produced at a 39 point pace after the All Star game, which is essentially right when Dion Phaneuf was traded. His shots on goal also went up from slightly over 1/g to almost 2/g. He will have to deal with Zaitsev as well, but with the increase in talent up front he could see a nice uptick, finally.
