While both are on rebuilding teams, I would choose Lehner. Three reasons: a) he is younger, b) the Sabres are farther along in the rebuild and should be better sooner, c) Bernier just can't string together enough good games to be considered the best long term number 1 in Toronto, while Lehner is the man in Buffalo.

Now, people may certainly point out that Lehner is a band-aid, but Bernier tends to miss stretches of time too. So while Bernier isn't hurt as often, the three reasons above give me pause to choose him over Lehner.

I still think Lehner can become a great G and I believe he can do it with Buffalo. If he can just stay healthy and get 60 starts next year he can take a big step forward. Full agreement with Bottlenecker.

I don't like either option if I am being completely honest but I would go with Lehner. If he's healthy, he's going to play.

We can't say the same about Bernier, who watched Garrett Sparks start a number of games down the stretch for the Leafs instead of playing himself. Now this could have simply been the Leafs playing their AHL goalie and not their NHL goalie for the better draft pick (but we can't say they were tanking on purpose because that wasn't happening ) but either way, Babcock didn't want to go with Bernier.

As I say, I don't like either option much but Lehner would be my choice here.

I'd go with Lehner. I still trust to be an above average starter.

I agree with the consensus, that there isn't a great choice, but out of the options, Lehner is better. However I have a different reasoning. He seems to be the one that you could get a much better return selling off during a solid (injury free) stretch.

Neither are great choices but Lehner just seems to show more passion in his game. His willingness to win makes him the better option...or maybe I should say less worse option.
