Feel the same... until Gillies is ready. He's only 32. He still can do the job part time with Ramo.

Calgary's D core is also a big improvement on Carolina's. Probably can't be worse, but who really knows how he may do in that situation.

I think they will have Ortio in the mix. As we know he is not waiver exempt, and I think he would get claimed now especially since his salary will probably be low again as he doesn't have the numbers to do well in arbitration. Since Ortio will cost so little, I think that free them up to grab an high price goalie like Howard or Andersen. Reimer is a possibility too. My guess is they don't resign Ramo because of wanting to keep Orio, and not wanting to have a tandem of Ramo-Ortio.

    What do we have...

    1 - Resign Ramo
    2 - Trade for Andersen
3 - Trade for Domingue or Smith
    4 - Sign Ward
5 - Trade for Lehtonen or Niemi
6 - Trade to get Howard
7 - Sign Reimer (not a big upgrade of Ramo IMO)
8 - Trade to get Elliott
    9 - Trade for Miller / Markstrom
    10 - Something else ???

In order, I would way #2, then #5... or stay with Ramo...

I was reading this aswell and wondering why Ortio wasn't mentioned as a backup atleast.. I'm thinking they go after Reimer.. Andersen would be too pricey for the young Flames..

Disagree. Nothing is too pricey to get your starter for 10 years, after how bad goaltending sewered them this year.

Agree with you on this. Nothing accelerates a rebuild like a stud goaltender, and any team in any situation would pay the price for the right fit.

I really do believe that Reimer ends up in Western Canada next season, likely on a 3 year deal. Jets or the Flames. Not sure Ortio really turned many heads last year, so I could actually see Calgary taking a chance and passing him through waivers. I am amazed how many players passed through waivers last year.

But he does have a favorable contract to take a shot on. Hard to say. Either way, likely a 2 - 3 year placeholder until Giles is ready.

The Jets have a three headed goalie monster as it is. Not sure they want to add another non-elite goalie to the mix and block Helle from even more starts.

I do agree Western Canada, Alberta to be specific, is his best bet.

I like Reimer for CGY as well.
There's a thread about goalies for future years from a few weeks ago... I can't remember the exact title.
I speculated that CGY would actually sign both C.Johnson & Reimer - sort of a dual combination-LITE, the way Dallas did Niemi-Lehtonen.

Ramo was pretty solid for a period this year... but I do believe they'll go with a clean slate.
From a player/organization perspective, I think the team needs to believe that a BIG change (i.e. BOTH goalies) could result in a BIG change towards positive results.

It's sort of the same mentality as a team switching goalies from game-to-game.
Detroit's Jimmy Howard played fine in Games 1 & 2 for Detroit.
But they still went with Mrazek in Game 3...
Howard might've won that game as well...
But having a new goalie (Mrazek) makes the team feel like it has a new/different shot.

I think the same thing applies for CGY.
And didn't their GM already make a previous comment about how the goalie situation would be much different for next year.
He's gotta sign two new guys - IMO - based on that comment (IIRC).

Just one thing I want to add, I think the Jets have a three headed goalie tandem but it is far away from a "monster", perhaps it could be a three headed goalie "where two are awful but their one-way contracts put them ahead of their stud goalie so he will not be given the reins until they can do something about that" tandem

I agree with what you were saying there, and I definitely think that could be a great thing for Calgary, having two fresh faces pushing each other and the team to be better.

Haha, well put. I meant monster in the terms of it being tough and not enjoyable to deal with. I agree that the talent isn't up to the same level as other murky goalie situations, and it is purely a contract based dilemma.
