Joe Garagiola, a beloved baseball figure as a player in the 1940s and '50s and as a radio and television announcer since, died on Wednesday at age 90.

The Arizona Diamondbacks, whom Garagiola served as a part-time color commentator from 1998 to 2012, announced his passing.

Garagiola was a Baseball Hall of Fame member as a broadcaster, but his appeal went beyond sports. He was a co-host of NBC’s “Today Show” from 1967 to 1973 and was an occasional guest host of “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.”

Garagiola, who played 12 major league seasons with the Cardinals, Pirates, Cubs and Giants, grew up in St. Louis and was childhood friends with New York Yankees legend Yogi Berra, who passed away at age 90 last September.

Garagiola retired from broadcasting in 2013. His son, Joe Jr., is an MLB senior VP for baseball operations and used to be general manager of the Diamondbacks.
