    Default Justin Schultz

Any thought's on what his numbers could look like in a full season with the pens? I'm thinking 40 points with a +15-20 rating if he stays healthy. I have an option to keep him for next season and would only cost a 17th round pick. Thought's?

No he won't get the minutes to get those kind of points. He also isn't a good defenseman right now. Letang only has a - 2 himself so I doubt he will get that kind of plus minus

That being said if a 17th doesn't get you anything then it might be a good trade off

I'd take the chance (depending on what is usually in the 17th round), but I also wouldn't hope for a positive +/- and I doubt he could get to 40 points with the Pens players that regularly occupy PP1

I would keep him for a 17th round pick.

But probably won't end up with more than 30-35 points.

He won't be top PP without some significant missed time to one of Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Hornqvist, or Kessel, not to mention whoever they sign/bring in in the offseason. Hell, Sprong might be ahead of him too if he can shoot a one-timer.

At the 17th round, this is a low risk/mid reward kind of keep. No brainer to do so here in my mind. If it works out, great, if not, easy to cut bait

I'd be surprised if he hits 30 pts but for a 17th round pick, he's probably worth taking the risk on.

Thanks all. Pretty even opinions across the board to go by.

Real choices for 3 keepers are:

    Klingberg - 7th - Done
    Phaneuf - 17th
    Ryan - 16th
    Schultz - 16th actually..
    Pavelski - 4th - seriously considering it

These are really the best options I have. You'll see a couple that are around the same round but that's because two of them were picked up off of the waiver wire. That's where they were drafted by their teams. According to our rules you can keep three. Nothing lower than the fourth round. So as this would go, if you keep two guys at 16, one would fall to 15. Wherever a guy was drafted you keep him and lose the pic before he was drafted. Who would you keep?

This information would have been handy earlier. Based off of this, Schultz isn't a keeper in my mind. I would take Ryan and Pavelski in addition to Klingon...Phaneuf and Schultz are not enough of a value here to worry about keeping.

+1. If you only have a couple of keepers then Schultz isn't worth fooling with based on the idea that he's going to turn his career around in a year.

I would put money that Schultz isn't a Penguin next year.

At the end of the season, Justin Schultz is an RFA and due a qualifying offer equal to the $3.9 million he is being currently paid 1.95.

Does Pittsburgh have enough cap room to give him just south of 4M?

I don't think so. Lets not even debate if he is worth 4M or not.

Do they have to? Just not qualify and resign him. I bet he's not looking for $4+. He's had a miserable run in Edmonton and he's finally happy/comfortable. I bet he chooses to stay in Pittsburgh at a discount.

Lets not forget, there are Dmen out there who arent worth anywhere near $4M and they seem to get it without blinking an eye. I am not saying he's worth it, but I wont be surprised if he gets it, somewhere.

I agreed. I wouldn't be surprised at all. I'm saying I wouldn't be surprised if he actively chose to take less and stay, just to be in a situation he's comfortable with and turn his career around. Only a short contract, but yea.
