    Default Barkov

Aleksander Barkov left Monday's game after being hit by Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader.
Abdelkader lined Barkov up with a solid shot, but it was definitely a high hit. The Panthers just announced that his night is over. We'll provide an update on his status as soon as the Panthers make one available. He should be considered day-to-day right now.

LOL. I agree he's done some dirty stuff in his career but one is clean.

Didn't look horrible for either Barkov's injury or Abdelkader's intent. Shoulder to jaw... hopefully it's just precautionary and he's back soon.

Big clean hit. The forearm was a push after he put his shoulder into him.

I don't know, from the replay it appears that Abdelkader leaves his feet, which is one of the things they're looking for. Combine that with a hit to the head and he could be getting a phone call today.

I see his feet coming off the ice after making contact. 1:00 mark of the video above is a good view for both points you make. It does look he hits high up on him and his head is a major point of contact, but I don’t think Abdelkader leaves his feet until after he makes contact.

I believe that whether it's before or after the contact is moot. The motion itself takes less than a second.

What the feet leaving the ice indicates is that his body is moving upward to make the hit. That's why the feet leave the ice - he's not moving laterally, he's moving upwards.

I think the "leaving his feet" comment gets way overblown in discussions on clean vs. dirty checks by fans.
From my experience playing, the hitter is usually the higher player, having his center of mass (hip+) higher than the checked player's center of mass (hip+).

Two big objects colliding while anchored to the ground would cause way more injuries (i.e. Car crash) because there's no place for each object's motion to move thru.

It really always looks worse than it is (when a guy leaves his feet).
The whole "player shouldn't leave his feet" is more directed to keep players from LUNGING with extra thrust/push into another player's head area.
It's sort of a simple way to say "Don't lunge/ don't target the highest areas: head".

But if you're gonna skate through a guy, it's best for BOTH players if one player might end up going thru-above and the other ending up thru-below.

    Explanatory example photo:

Back to Abdelkader, I think it was a clean check.
Players only hop a tiny bit so their body finds a natural thru-bounce-off. (anybody that has played a few games of checking hockey has probably been thru this type of thing)

I didn't see anything wrong with the hit.

Barkov owner says clean hit. I'd rather see him try to take the puck away with skill as Barkov has his head down, but it is what it is.

I think Gallant already confirmed it's Bjugstad.

Bjugstad should be pegged as the centerman on the top line tonight.
