There's also the fact that the burden of proof shifts dramatically in a civil suit vs. criminal proceedings. It's nearly impossible in most sexual assault cases to prove *beyond a reasonable doubt* what occurred since it is essentially a he said/she said affair. In a civil case, though, it just comes down to whose story is more credible on the *balance of probability*. I'd be very surprised if Varlamov doesn't pay a settlement to kill the civil suit, making the settlement conditional on no public disclosure of the settlement, etc. In other words, we may well never know for sure how this ends.
