    Default Ziyat Paigin

Put him on your radar. Big offensive D (6.06 - 200) drafted by the Oilers in the 7th round of 2015 as an overager.

Traded to Sochi at the beginning of this year and now 19pts in 26GP with Sochi. Played at the KHL all-stars game this year. Not bad for a 20 years old kid in the KHL.

I wouldn't just put him on your radar, I'd pick him up. He should be available in almost all the leagues but his production as a 20 year old defenseman in the KHL is unheard of. Add that to the fact that he's 6'6 and can skate and he should have no problem making the NHL at all. I'm gonna disregard his stats before the trade because he was getting criminally underutilized at around 8 minutes a game but here is what his NHL point totals would look like compared to other high end d prospects:

    Paigin: 49.73
    Montour (1 year older): 32.8
Parayko last year (still 1 year older than Paigin is today): NCAA: 22.74 AHL: 14.86

As you can see he's noticeably higher than those guys. I'd do Gostisbehere but his AHL over the past couple years is a small sample size and his production dramatically increased in the NHL probably due to unsustainable production. Pick up Paigin while you still have the chance.

Ummm, ok. He is on my Watch List now.

Any idea when he comes over and plays consistently in the NHL?

Hard to tell, oilers have a lot of up and coming D propsects who imo don't have the same upside but are closer to the NHL > Nurse and Reinhart. Could possibly be moved for more immediate D help. I'd imagine that he has the talent to come to North America next year but he'd probably want to stay in the KHL one more year for development. It's hard to not see him cracking a roster in 2017-18 since he already has size and mobility which are two things that usually hold someone back from the NHL.

    Probably in 2017-2018.

According to McCurdy’s article for The Cult of Hockey, Paigin is under contract until the end of the 2016-17 season, so it’s likely two or three years too early to talk about this player.

My understanding is that he may be headed back to AK Bars Kazan which would be unfortunate because his coach does not usually play younger players... especially D.

If I'm Edmonton, I would be doing everything within my power to get him over to N. America next year - but it is Edmonton we're talking about.

Completely agree. He's going to get offered huge money but itd be best for his career to go to the ahl for a year rather than get buried behind older dmen like he did to start the year. His production after being traded has been better than Panarin's at the same age.

    Just caught this thread.

As disclaimer, I haven't seen any junior hockey or KHL games this year.
Maybe the kid is the real deal.

But... everything should be looked at (statistically) in context.

    1. 21pts in 30gp is impressive... but it's also 6th on his own team. This includes a leading scorer named Andre Petersson (SWE) with 35pts in 39gp and Mr. Andrei Kostitsyn with 31pts in 38gp.

    2. Sochi HC has 141gp this year. That's around 4th best in the KHL. The top D on Metallurg is 34-year old Canadian named Chris Lee (LOTS of amateur league points, no SNIFF in NHL), with 34pts. One of the top D on Ufa is Sami Lepisto with 29pts (35pts in 176 NHL games). It's actually fun to look at the top five leading defensemen in scoring in the KHL, here.

    3. Many people know that I love to reference the last time this happened, which was about 5 years ago when everybody went absolutely ga-ga for David Rundblad's SEL numbers. Ga.Ga.

    These are inferior leagues.
Not everybody is gonna fit in like a Colton Parayko.

But still - it never hurts to have opinions on unknown guys...
I guess I'll have to see if I can find some clips myself of him.

Those are all good points but the thing to take in to consideration is Paigin is in his 20-21 year old season and even high end forwards have trouble putting up those points in the KHL at that age. It's up there near Tarasenko level, however, Tarasenko started doing it much earlier than him and broke out even more the next year. If a player is 22 or older putting up those points than maybe it's not too impressive but at this age, as a Dman, it's pretty unheard of.

Yes but he's not a part of their organization anymore. For what it's worth he was the most skilled prospect when he was in Binghamton and he was considered by some to be second in skill to Jason spezza in the entire organization. He's been a top player for a while he just always gets hurt and doesn't have an NHL style
