    Default Gold Glove Finalists

    Jays with 3 finalists: Buerhle, Martin and Pillar - well deserved. Really hope Pillar wins!

    I'm surprised Goins didn't make the cut for 2nd base... he probably doesn't have enough name recognition, because I don't know many better 2nd basemen out there.

    I saw the list yesterday, and I was shocked Goins didn’t beat out Dozier. He’s not a very good defensive 2B. He’s an alright defender with a big + bat. Must not have played enough at 2B to be considered.

    He is a Gold Glove caliber player tho, obviously. If he plays next yr, he’ll win it. Travis is still an unknown, and we’ve seen how much Goins bat can grow if he gets AB’s

    I always found pitchers winning gold gloves to be a bit weird but whatever. Glad to see them getting recognition.

    Any pitcher that can field takes great pride in it. Buehrle and Dickey go full out for the 1B bag whenever they can. I’m glad they get an award for something that isn’t expected from them by most people.

    I just don’t know how they would choose lol. That’s got to be the hardest one. Pick offs, field assists, and catching fly balls in the infield have to be what they look at.

    128 games should have been enough to quality Goins. He and Pillar are the best fielders on the team. Martin's good too obviously, but Goins and Pillar really stand out. I'll be upset if Pillar doesn't win

    He only played 65games at 2B, and 56games at SS, then a couple at LF, 3B, PH and such.

    Hard to complain too much with the list. From the Jay's perspective

    Good for Buehrle for getting the nomination although I agree it's the hardest position award;
    I agree Goins didn't get a mention due to a combination of not playing enough and being an unknown;
    I assume Tulo didn't get a nomination due to the trade, guy's defense is unreal, he'll win several Gold Gloves in the years to come;
    Martin is an interesting one, his arm is awesome and he led the AL in CS%, he had a ton of pass balls though;
    If Pillar loses to Trout it will be a tragedy of name recognition and voters wanting Trout to win something after his MVP titles.

    With respect to a pitcher's fielding ability a lot of it has to do with the positioning they put themselves in after the pitch. Some guys will completely vault off the mound to their side giving themselves no ability to make a play up the middle (and leaving them completely susceptible to comebackers) unless it's right on their glove side, and some guys land in a set position ready to react to a ball hit on either side. I don't follow advanced stat metrics but I wonder if there's a metric that somehow tracks exceptional plays that pitchers are able to make when they put themselves in a good position post-pitch vs. pitchers that just peel off that probably plays a role.

    With Tulo- prolly, especially going from one league to another. It’s also such a defense deep position he’d have to very minimal errors and such with his playing time moving forward. They’ll let him loose so to speak, but I can see him sitting/DH-ing every 10th game?

    Martin – Wonder how many were thrown by Dickey? The catcher position isn’t deep at all, so his pick offs and flyball catches are enough to get him in the conversation

    Pillar – It’s hard to argue against Trout (no errors at all, all year I think), but Pillar was a highlight reel on his own. Even Kiermaier was outstanding in CF. That position is just crazy deep.

    Trout 0errors, 7assists, 428put outs
    Pillar 2 errors, 7assists, 404put outs

    For the record, I think Pillar has the edge on Trout, but it’s close.

    All good points. I was thinking a lot of Martin's pass balls could be Dickey's as well, couldn't remember how much he caught Dickey in the season.

    So I'm looking at the 3 CF finalists and the stats are intriguing to say the least

    Trout- 0 Errors, Range Factor 2.87, 7 assists, dWar 1.0
    Pillar- 2 Errors, Range Factor 2.99, 7 assists, dWar 2.8
    Kiermaier- 5 Errors, Range Factor 3.26, 15 assists, dWar 5.0

    I didn't watch any of the Rays games all years but those numbers for Kiermaier are indeed ridiculous.

    KK has a cannon for an arm, and can run just as fast as Pillar. Think healthy Bautista’s arm, with Pillar’s speed. He was clocked at throwing someone out at home plate with a 100mph throw this yr.

    It’s got to be the closest race for GG in the CF in a while. Trout, 0 errors, Pillar, very good across the board with crazy highlights, KK, higher error, along with stupid high assists and dWAR. Positives and negatives across the boards for each player

    I honestly can't imagine something as petty as 0 errors vs. 2 errors would be the deciding factor here...

    Buerhle wasn’t going to win it, Pillar is understandable because CF is just so deep. The one I don’t like is catcher. It’s a lot easier for Perez to catch for KCR because he’s got pretty much the same pitcher up on the mound throwing at him day in and day out. They are the same type of pitcher really.

    Martin had to deal with a knuckleballer, a corner painter, flame throwers, and non-accurate hard thrower (Sanchez). I’m prolly biased, but I think Martin had a harder time prepping to get thrown at, had some great behind the plate catches, and was the best catcher at throwing out potential steals.
