Matthews is better than Strome and Marner, not as good as McDavid and Eichel. He's a franchise center. Chychrun - #1 dman, then Laine, Puljujaarvi and Tkachuck are all in the mix as dynamic forwards.

I think we can still debate Eichel vs Matthews. I would take Eichel because he is in the NHL and looks good. But at the same age, I would not say that Matthews is not as good as Eichel.

ISS is already ranking their top 30 for next year.

Here's Bob McKenzie's rankings as well.

As far as comparing the two drafts, it's still too early to do that. In the past few years, we always find guys who come from nowhere into top draft positions (usually starts right around the WJC). I will say that Austin Matthews is probably the undisputed #1 overall this year, unless something drastic happens between now and next June. I also think he is a notch below McDavid/Eichel but is a better option than Strome/Marner. After that, we will see the movement.

Many NHL scouts believe that if Auston Matthews was eligible for the 2015 NHL Draft, he might have given Jack Eichel a run for his money as the No. 2 choice.

    On Eichel vs Matthews:

With all the cool names, that might make this draft class better than 2003. NOT!

I last years draft class is going to be a lot better than this upcoming one.

Thought I would bump this thread with the WJC going on. Which 2016 eligibles have caught your eye so far? Matthews, Puljujarvi, Laine, Tkachuk are no brainers, but outside the top 4, Nylander looks like he could challenge Laine/Tkachuk for a top 3 selection. I wonder if Toronto will be looking to complete the Nylander duo in the coming draft? Olli Juolevi now has 9 assists in Finland's 5 games, not bad for a d-man. He's also accumulated 23 pts in 28 games for a stacked London team, so I'm not sure how accurate the numbers are. Looks like he could be the next d-man selected after Chychrun.

Finnish forwards are interesting creatures... who was the last true impact forward of Finnish origin? Selanne? If you look at the current veterans (M. Koivu, J. Jokinen, V. Filppula) and some decent kids starting to make their mark in the NHL (Barkov, Teravainen, Mi. Granlund, Lehtera, Rantanen, Pulkkinen, Donskoi), I can't help but wondering if we will see a Finn challenging for a scoring title anytime soon. I'm hoping Puljujarvi/Laine can break out of the prototypical Finnish mold and dominate the NHL offensively, but history seems to suggest otherwise. Just something to consider come draft day. Guys like Tkachuk and Nylander are viable options at #2.
