    Dobber Sports Demi-God

Default Re: 2015/2016 Dobber PRO (Tier II) Campbell League

Yesterday I made up a "Reach Factor" equation based on where players were selected.
Here it is for this league:

    7.1 Devil's Backbonino (pre-list autodraft)
    ...
    3.3 Goner For Connor
    2.8 The 'Eh' team
    -2.0 Vancouver Beavers
    -3.9 2toRuutu2toTootooToo
    -7.9 Bautista's Aura
    -7.9 Cleveland Stammers
    -8.4 The Nickel City
    -9.5 Savages
    -10.2 Captain Cangiroux
    -12.2 Uncle Benn's
    -17.7 The Jobbers
    ...
    -23.4 rattus rattus

Interpretation in conjunction with Temek's Projected Standings:
High in Temek Standings & High in Reach Value - suggests team value-drafted players wrongfully passed over by other GMs
High in Temek Standings & Low in Reach Value - suggests team is reaching for the RIGHT players
Low in Temek Standings & High in Reach Value - suggests team took bad players rightfully passed over by other GMs (ex. JVR)
Low in Temek Standings & Low in Reach Value - suggests team is reaching for the WRONG players

With 10 teams in the negative, it indicates a LOT of reaching... and there was, wisely... I'll explain that in another league-draft-post summary.
Of the four Dobber leagues, I'd contest that this one had the most GMs that identified players to reach for... and leave the poor ranked players alone. (such as JVR. We let him slide to pick 100-something...)

    Projected standings for Pro Campbell

Rank Team Skater pts Goalie pts Total pts
    1 Captain Cangiroux 60 16 76
    2 Devil's Backbonino 46 30 76
    3 Uncle Benn's 46 30 76
    4 The 'Eh' team 51 18 69
    5 The Nickel City 43 25 68
    6 Vancouver Beavers 45 18 63
    7 Goner For Connor 46 15 61
    8 The Jobbers 35 25 60
    9 Savages 42 17 59
    10 Bautista's Aura 30 27 57
    11 Cleveland Stammers 45 10 55
    12 2toRuutu2toTootooToo 40 14 54
    13 rattus rattus 17 28 45

Interestingly there's a 3-way tie at the top and my projections suggest that your team, Pengwin, isn't quite as bad as you seem to think. Horrorfan also seems to have done a pretty good job with the auto-draft rankings again. Differences are quite small though and 10-15 pts isn't really that much as far as projections go. I guess rattus rattus is the only team I'd be really surprised to win the league based on these projections.

I am not surprised either that a lot of the teams did reach for certain players as I think you pretty much had to. There's the available background information from 3 leagues with identical settings so everyone should have had a pretty good idea where players roughly go in the draft. There were also several team draft reviews highlighting some sleeper players so maybe that slightly influenced some decisions too. So if you really wanted someone, let's say Dano for example, you probably had to reach 1-3 rounds before he went in other drafts if you really wanted him.

Default Re: 2015/2016 Dobber PRO (Tier II) Campbell League

    My team summary:

    Captain Cangiroux
    1. (9) Claude Giroux (Phi - C,RW)
Going into the draft, my own spreadsheet identified that the elite six D (Karlsson, Byfuglien, Subban, Weber, Burns, Letang) had such great "relative" value that I was prepared to take D in the first 4 rounds... maybe 5 straight if Doughty/OEL were there in the 5th. I had even considered that I would take Lundqvist at #9 if Karlsson was gone. It became apparent later in the draft that several GMs had their eyes on FHG rankings and were sniping robotic picks - which means... I didn't have a chance. Karlsson went #2, Lundqvist went #6. My favourite player Giroux was there, so I took him - knowing I could re-use one of my fave team names.

    2. (18) Joe Pavelski (SJ - C,LW)
The guy I wanted here was Buff - who went 19-29-24 in the other leagues, so I thought I could get him. I project Buff's full 82gp from a D slot to make him 2nd most valuable player in this format, near tied with Karlsson. Buff went 10th. 10th! Nobody takes Buff 10th unless they've got some data to peg him there. Ah fugg it. I have Pavelski about 10th-12th in this format, that's fine... and he's my 2nd fave player who racks up a ton of PPP.

***At this point, I'm thoroughly annoyed that I didn't get at least one D... at least I got my two favourite players... but worry about my high-end D strategy.***

    3. (35) Jakub Voracek (Phi - RW)
I wanted one of Burns/Weber/Letang here, but the former two go before my pick. Last year's #2 overall player, Voracek, is still there. At #35. Can I really pass on this? Considering I have a vested interested in Giroux, I might as well double-down with Voracek and I don't want to let players slide. Fine, done, starting to hate my team.

    4. (44) Rick Nash (NYR - LW,RW)
When the sixth of my elite six D men, Letang, goes at pick #36 (even though he's Yahoo59)... I want to cry. It's the Cleveland Stammers, who also took Buff (Yahoo32) at #10. I'm thinking "WTF is going on?"... I feel like Evil-Bizarro-Me is drafting right next to regular-me. It honestly felt eerie and my blood started to boil at this point. I took Rick Nash, because, like Voracek, he was a top skater last year and I just can't let him sit there.

*pause. think Pengwin. re-strategize. The one thing I noted was that missing the good D meant there would not be goal-scoring & PPP & SOG left among D at end of draft. (I'd end up being very right about this). Hating my team, I vowed to take the highest G/SOG/PPP if this trend of early-D-sniping continued by leaguemates. And it did.*

    5. (61) Andrew Ladd (Wpg - LW)
Shattenkirk, OEL, Doughty, Yandle, Giordano... even Justin FAULK!!!... went before I could pick again. That... is a RUN ON D. Mothafugga. So my options here were to take John Carlson (who I like, but doesn't HIT) or to go with another high-end forward. I was feeling like I'd be "chasing" to jump on the train... so I didn't. I vowed to deplete the high-end forwards and took Andrew Ladd, one of the last massive hitters that can also score 60+pts and 200+SOG.

    6. (70) Daniel Sedin (Van - LW)
Through 5 rounds, no D. I was truely frustrated. 0/5 in opening round plan. At least I had Giroux... and Pavelski. Inside my turn, I had wanted Nick Foligno - who won't repeat his year, but is still great grit. I took it as a sign from the Fantasy Hockey Gods when he was sniped. I reminded myself that anybody using FHG would probably overdraft HITS-value, so I zagged on doing that myself and took the high-offense (limited hits) of another LW... hoping to also deplete a position and create overdrafting.

    7. (87) Marian Hossa (Chi - RW)
Hossa went 122-105-120 in the other three leagues. That should be enough to wait... but I've simply watched too many guys sniped... too many people are drafting like me, so I reach here. I promise I'll get a defenseman next round. I queue up John Klingberg - because I'm gonna beat these guys to him.

    8. (96) Jaden Schwartz (StL - LW)
You know how it goes... Klingberg, who went 115-127-95... goes at #94. It's impossible, I can't get my hands on a D. I say eff-you to everybody (I think I actually did) and go after another high-scoring emerging player that is hopefully not projected high on FHG where everybody (not really everybody, but it felt like it) is referencing. I'll take Schwartz and deplete the LW more. I don't care if I have 4-5 LWers.

    9. (113) Patrice Bergeron (Bos - C)
The next guy I queued up was Jason Spezza, who went 139-137-118 in other drafts. He'll be there at #113. You know the story... sniped. at #100... by a guy who's not even really there... horrorfan & his damn auto-queue. (Props to him, btw... brilliant, brilliant draft planning to get such a solid team without being live.) More cussing. Fine... and no exaggeration, I queue up Tatar (gone, next pick), I queue up Palat (gone, next pick). I made a comment at this point in the draft to the effect of "Are you guys inside my eyes?" (GMs will remember this). I was so frustrated. Still no D. Queue up Nyquist, gone, Vrbata, gone. I took Bergeron - it's a solid pick. I had so many wingers I could use a center and he'll shoot a lot as Boston chases wins. I'm OK with this... but I can't honestly say I've EVER been in a league with so many players sniped. Ever. Somebody's looking at what I have in my head. It's painful.

    10. (122) Mark Streit (Phi - D)
Streit, with my investment in the PHI PP, is probably the first guy to fall to me. I wouldn't say I targeted him pre-draft, but felt content to land him here. One of the oddest parts of the draft was the previous pick... the Stammers, who sniped defensemen in front of me all draft... took... Kari Ramo at #121. He must know something I don't... is Ramo going to be the guy???

    11. (139) Nick Bjugstad (Fla - C)
    This was the part of the draft where I actually (seriously) cussed out loud, at home... loudly. Pre-ramble, I don't have any paperwork in front of me when I draft. Everything is in my head from preparation of spreadsheets & mocks. I queue up about 4-5 players at a time. Sometimes they all go... and then the queue is empty so I reload it. I had Kesler, Hartnell, Pavelec, Zibanejad in my queue. That's all I need. Ziba is my "safe guy". He's like Yahoo264. He went 164-169-154 in my other leagues. 139 is safe for him. You know how this goes: Kesler-gone, Hartnell-gone, Pavelec-gone... and Ziba... at #130, taken. (I got "Jobber"-ed). Effin eff. And my pick is approaching and internet is cutting. You know, when you are clicking sort and it's lagging, not sorting, pausing, time is not moving, oh shit. I had the player list up and realized Ryan Miller was left on the boad. A GIFT, a GIFT... Miller at #139, a full-time decent goalie still there... YES!!!... but my delay-clicks are in effect... all of a sudden I'm on F/D page... time is at like 10sec and pick is about to expire... and Miller is not at top of my default queue because I (stupidly) re-ordered it with my skaters atop only. Eff. I had just enough time to click the star-icon next to Bjugstad on the player page. Internet cuts. I come back... and at pick #140, right after me, Ryan Miller... is gone. {sigh}

    12. (148) Petr Mrazek (Det - G)
From there, everything went to pure frustration. jcarins had taken Howard at #122... and I'd be damned if I let him value-draft the DET-pair with two picks coming back to him. I'll take 45 starts from Mrazek. And I had to pass on Vatanen & Suter & Niskanen & Dubinsky... because I'm in serious goalie trouble at this point with only 40 starts of 164.

*pause. I have time to think. It's 17 picks before I go again. Re-strategize, think Pengwin, think. Notes to self: Consider all teams are using FHG or have written every note on players I've made on Dobber, I've got to completely zag in the 2nd half of draft. I DO need another couple D... I can't survive on just 1 PP D-man. OK, gotta get more goalie starts, MUST, priority #1, need a couple D-men, priority #2, then I'm going to really reach on back-ups on good teams to try to piece-wise fill goalie starts... I don't need bench skaters anyways because it's max GP. OK, we can do this. But I seriously hate my team.*

    13. (165) Jonas Hiller (Cgy - G)
The best goalie on the board when it comes back to me is Hiller. I'm befuddled. I think he's the #1... but I suck with goalies and thought Nik Backstrom was MIN's #1 to start last season. Maybe Ramo is the #1. Maybe I'm in trouble. But I had to do this... I set Martin Jones & Kari Lehtonen in my queue and both got sniped within 5 picks of me. Ugh. OK, Hiller, 40 starts... I'm close to 80.

    14. (174) Zdeno Chara (Bos - D)
Chara is old, yes, but I have to take some risks because I only have Streit... one D. I cry when I watch Dano go at #172. He went 191-261-191 in the other leagues... here, he goes at #172... it's a tough, tough draft. Another player I was hoping to get later, Elias Lindholm went at #170. There was a lot of value in the 175 range to be had... and I missed it because I shit the bed with D & G. Ugh.

    15. (191) Andrej Sekera (Edm - D)
Sekera is an odd case. He's a player that I thought teams would reach for. He was so dynamic in Carolina two seasons ago... but perhaps FHG & Dobber (I felt like I was drafting against their minions for much of draft) don't have Sekera pegged that highly. I don't know. He doesn't HIT big, but I think he may run PP1... or at least PP2. I think he's a good risk here.. but again, would've loved to land Plekanec or Abdelkader or Kadri - all who were sniped off my queue.

    16. (200) Scott Darling (Chi - G)
16th round for Scott Darling. Yup. I had no choice. I'm simply way down in goalie starts. Hoping Darling gives me +25gp to go with 80gp from Mrazek/Hiller. 105gp.

    17. (217) Antti Raanta (NYR - G)
See above. NYR has 16 B2B, I'm hoping for 20-25 from Raanta. 125gp.

    18. (226) Boone Jenner (Cls - C)
This was the FIRST pick all draft where I queued a guy a full round in advance... and got him.
Boone my handsome friend, thank you for the smile you brought to my face.

    19. (243) Nino Niederreiter (Min - RW)
Two rounds in a row... TWO! I wanted Nino and got Nino! Stocked back HITS that I forego in taking guys like Daniel Sedin, Schwartz, Hossa, and Bergeron

    20. (252) Brooks Orpik (Was - D)
There was NOTHING on the board for defensemen. So I'll take the 300-hit D man who'll give me a PLUS... the next best D-man only had 230-hits.

    21. (269) Adam Lowry (Wpg - C,LW)
This is a sort of 25th round pick... but if anybody has read Winnipeg line-tinkering, they've put him on their late-draft list... I'm just not waiting that long. He's my 13th F in a 12-slot maxGP set-up, I need no more F.

    22. (278) Jeff Zatkoff (Pit - G)
Wasn't drafted in other leagues... but I dout other GMs are trying to scrape together 20 starts at a time like me.

    23. (295) Alec Martinez (LA - D)
I had Petry sniped from me. LA should be a PLUS team and he might get PP2 time.

    24. (304) Matt Irwin (Bos - D)
With Seidenberg out, there's minutes to munch. Bs can still be PLUS guys and Irwin could see PP2 time with Hamilton now in CGY.

    25. (321) Jhonas Enroth (LA - G)
My 6th goalie. We'll see how it goes, but if I'm to get to 164gp, I'll need: 45-Mrazek, 40-Hiller, 25-Darling, 20-Raanta, 20-Zatkoff, 20-Enroth. (-5 due to conflicts). Hope that gets it done.

I don't really like my team.
    I give my draft a C-... with a D for "strategy execution".
I do have a ton of forward depth... they'll have to carry me.
Goalies get injured - so if just one of Howard(DET), Ramo(CGY), Crawford(CHI), Lundqvist(NYR), Fleury(PIT), or Quick(LA) go down... I've got the next inline for starts.
Gonna do some serious praying on goalies though.

    Projected finish: 4th / 13
My best hope... is that the balance of having such a keen GM group will allow somebody to win a tight league. (ah, in that regard, I don't miss temek )

Entertaining and informative write-up Peng! I enjoyed your commentary and felt your frustration! The Dobberhockey Experts draft was a little like that for me, snagging my 1st D in the 6th round (a slight reach - Hamilton) and then getting sniped on several guys until finally adding my 2nd D in round 13. Meh, there are a plethora of D who could hit for 40 points (okay, 35 with a hope for 40), that I would rather take forwards that are nearly a lock for 55-60 points with good peripherals. I kinda admit that I think your G strategy is intriguing. It requires a fair bit of managing and being quick to the WW (sorry about Dubnyk last year...), but it allows you to load up on everything else.

It's the Cleveland Stammers, who also took Buff (Yahoo32) at #10.
I took Stammer at 10 haha but I feel your pain! My queue was getting sniped all draft too. For the record, I wasn't using any Jedi mind-tricks on you and was not drafting from FHG (I've never used it). I was using the standard deviation rankings in Yahoo for the past two years and finding value where I could in the Yahoo O-ranks compared to that list and what was left on the board.

I had to reach for Letang at 36th because I knew if I didn't there would be no D on the board. Ramo is just a gut feeling, there were plenty of forwards on the board and I know it's a mega-reach but I wanted to swing for the fences.

Pengwin, because we were drafting back to back all night, I felt the same pain as you. You snagged Voracek, Nino one pick ahead of me. Players were getting drafted a solid round or two before normal.

It was a solid, close draft all night. Best of luck this season to all!
