I don't think so. He`s 24, played less than 60 games and is not signed for more than 2 years. He can be send down without going through waivers.

But can't the Flames just start him in the AHL and just leave him there unless they have an injury and call him up ?

naw because he is up with the team during training camp. All waiver eligible players need to be passed through waivers to begin the season in AHL

But waiver doesn't start until late september, so can't they just assign him to the farm team as long as it's at least 11 days before the season starts ?

I don't believe that is the case. That's why there's hundreds of guys on waivers in the days leading up to the NHL season.

Good discussion! Quick question though... How good is Gillies going to be? Does he have potential to be the starter in say 3yrs? I have the opportunity to draft either him or Matt Murray, both have potential long term

I think it will be Ramo 60/40, it sounded like earlier in the offseason they were suggesting that Ramo would be the #1.

The Flames goalies situation will be very similar to what it was last year. Hiller will start as the Flames number 1 goalie like he did last year and then he will lose it at some point and then get it back again. He will lose it again and then get it back again. This will go on all season long. Ramo will get hurt at some point during the season at least once and this will allow Ortio will get a chance to play in a few games.

Hiller 52 GP
Ramo 34 GP
Ortio 6 GP

Hiller will be traded. They will not waive Ortio as they invested a lot into him and seen I'm as a starter for the team going forward. Ramo was signed for a reason. They wouldn't just sign him if it meant they'd have to waive Ortio. Hiller should be gone soon.

Ortio is by far the closest to NHL action. I keep seeing lists with Gillies and McDonald rated higher than him for potential but they are probably several years away from any NHL action.
