Detroit has a way of finding gems during the draft. I like Svechnikov here, but admit that I haven't heard a lot about Guryanov. Jim Nill isn't stupid, and I am sure Guryanov will be given his chance in a few years, but Ken Holland is no slouch either, and he is getting a fast skating prospect in Svechnikov.

I like Svechnikov more. The guy has all the tools - power, speed, IQ. He should have gone higher at the draft and I believe GMs who passed on him will be sorry. Detroit got a real good one here.

Svechnikov for me. Higher upside and better fantasy player IMO.

Yeah but who wants to wait for Svechnikov. Guryanov could be playing this season.

i went with guryanov over svechnikov. i think they are both top prospects but i didnt want to wait 2-3 years for svechnikov to make the wings and then another 2-3 years for him to be an impact player on their team.

guryanov probably wont make the team next season but i think if he can leapfrog nichushkin and play with seguin/benn he will be a very good asset to own.

i could be totally wrong, svechnikov could be the better player but when you factor in the situation i like guryanov a lot better.

I agree with the timeline here making Guryanov a more interesting short term pick. Detroit does take their sweet time with their prospects but Svechnikov will be worth the wait.

I'm probably in the minority here but I would take Guryanov over Svechnikov. But I believe the difference is very small either way.

It's close but I'd take Guryanov so I'm on your side.

In the interview at the draft, Nill said that Guryanov will play at least 1 more year in Russia if not 2 (his contract has 2 years left). So it is very hard to predict which of these guys will reach NHL faster. Not every Red Wing prospect takes forever to get to NHL, i.e. Tatar.

The guy who went first in the draft, Guryanov. Detroit also hasn't had much success with their first rounders over the last decade. I bet Deteoit takes Guryanov over him as well.

My two cents on these guys, as I attended the first World Junior Showcase game between Canada/Russia last night.

These two played on the third line, with Svechnikov at centre and Guryanov on RW. Guryanov is definitely the more "skill" forward of the two, his moves were out wide with some speed and he does have some smooth hands (practicing some extra puck drills and tip-ins during warm-up) but he couldn't gain any traction whatsoever against any of the Canadian D. Svechnikov has learned English, because he used it excessively to complain about the three penalties called on him last night. He's a big forward, almost similar to Crouse, but he was a bit slow getting back on D which resulted in all of his penalties, and he became visibly more frustrated as the game went along. That being said, no one on Russia played a particularly stellar game, and with only 15 shots there really weren't many positives for the whole team.

I would prefer Svechnikov myself, but agree the difference is pretty minimal. I do not think the wait on him will be very long either, new coach in Detroit has had to play with their young players for a while and may not be the type to prefer to have old players resigned and taking up a roster spot (i.e. Dan Cleary) instead of giving the younger guys a chance

Ken Holland had trouble describing his thoughts on Svechnikov on TSN last night during the first intermission. Said he hadn't done anything to stand out from the crowd, but that the three-team tournament was very hard for any one player to dominate. He did also mention that they weren't scared off by any changes in the "Russian factor", that was who they had ranked the highest.
