Default Pick your D pairing (real life) NOT fantasy value

If you were taking over an NHL team from scratch and you could choose any of the following (10) D pairings, which would be your choice and why?

A couple of notes... each pairing has a LHD and a RHD. Mark Giordano is purposely absent from the list due to his age.

    The choices:

    1. (LD) Ryan Suter - (RD) Shea Weber

    2. (LD) Hampus Lindholm - (RD) Aaron Ekblad

    3. (LD) Victor Hedman - (RD) Erik Karlsson

    4. (LD) Oliver Ekman-Larsson - (RD) Alex Pietrangelo

    5. (LD) Ryan McDonagh - (RD) P.K. Subban

    6. (LD) Duncan Keith - (RD) Drew Doughty

    7. (LD) Cam Fowler - (RD) Kris Letang

    8. (LD) Noah Hanifin - (RD) Seth Jones

    9. (LD) Morgan Rielly - (RD) Justin Faulk

    10. (LD) Roman Josi - (RD) Kevin Shattenkirk

Give me Suter and Weber for a real hockey team.

Damn didn't see Keith and Doughty. Would take them first. Both of them have stanley cup winner written all over them.

So 2 for Hedman-Karlsson so far and 2 for Keith-Doughty, eh? Thought Suter-Weber, McDonagh-Subban and OEL-Pietrangelo would get more love especially!

It's tempting to go OEL - Pietrangelo. That would be such a formidable combo with intense offensive and defensive ability, not to mention your team would be set with them for the next decade (Assuming you have them locked up!).

They are all good defender, but you need guys like Keith, Doughty, Chara, Lidström or Stevens to win the cup. If you can get two of them, you should ignore pure points and regular season performance.

    Certainly a valid point.

Put me down for McDonagh and Subban.

Man, do I really hate both of those guys as a Penguins fan and that's probably the reason I pick them. McDonagh lays it all out on the line every time he is on the ice and Subban is a master pest with tons of skill.

    For "real" hockey: Keith/Doughty

No question I'd be tempted by Heds/Karlsson... but a DK/DD pairing truly brings all I want from a #1 pairing.

There's a tear in my eye thinking about the fact thst the McD/PK pairing actually could've (should've) been patrolling the Habs blueline for the better part of the next decade (tnx Gainey and Gomez).

They'd be my 2nd choice, slightly behind Doughty and Keith and slightly above Karlsson and Hedman. Weber and Suter are right there too for me.

Weber and Suter for me.. 2 guys who could be captains.. Without a dought this is my top pairing..

Doughty and Keith were my 2nd choice, followed by McDonaugh and Subban..

This is interesting because as a coach I'm not positive I would use any of these pairings together on my squad if I had weaker defensemen filling out the group. Is it better to lock down 25-30 minutes a night with one all-world pairing or have a real firm grasp on 45-50 minutes a night with a stud on each of my top two pairings? We've seen examples of both in the past and both offer their own positives and negatives.

One big factor, how do contracts play into this? Are we using their current deals or are we assuming it's a blank slate?

I'd probably take Keith-Doughty no matter what, win some Cups the next couple of years and then ease Keith into his twilight years with Doughty smack in his prime and maybe win some more Cups that way.
