    Default Google Chromecast

Has anyone bought this? What exactly does it do, what are its shortcomings and what are its strengths?

I cancelled my dish and now I'm strictly HDTV via antenna, NHL GameCentre, and downloads.

I don't have it because I've had the HDMI cords I have needed for several years, but a few of my friends do and it works great.

Basically, think of it as an HDMI cord - except that its wireless. You put the Chromecast into the TV like a USB, and from basically any device and computer you can "push" the video to the TV. And like all things Google, it's not limited to just google operating systems. You can use any computer, any operating system; likewise, any phone and any operating system. So no matter what device you buy in the future, it will still be compatible. It's basically Google's version of Apple TV, and like most things google, it does it better than Apple, its compatible with everything, and its cheaper.

Here's a great review/summary of it I came across a while ago when I was initially considering it (but decided I might as well just keep using my hdmi cords a while longer since I don't truly have a need to replace them yet, other than convenience).. http://www.techradar.com/reviews/aud...1171126/review

Ah, so I don't have to keep loading the flash stick. I can just stream it from my computer? What does it use, Windows Media? Or VLC?

    Read this: https://www.google.ca/chrome/devices...ast/learn.html

It's a simple Chromecast 101 page that Google made that shows you how to "cast" to your TV. It simply lays out the different ways. In summary, there are many ways you can do it. You can use the Chrome web browser, and you can use a variety of apps (as many support chromecast from the app itself).

Edit: Actually, watching the short video at that link is actually super helpful. Shows you how to cast from both your phone or computer. Super easy.

in short, it's amazing. It acts a receiver and whatever is on your phone or laptop can be streamed to the tv its inserted to. I am the same way - no TV or whatnot but Gamecenter streamed through the 360 or PS4 and then netflix and this nifty little app called Showbox, which should eventually displace netflix (imo) as it is free, and has waaaay more selection of new and old tv and video. It's a streaming device that is well worth the 35$

It's shortcomings are not being able to be too far away from your router, which is obnoxious. it's like 30 ft. But beyond that, it is well worth the coin and you can use multiple applications. Streams whatever is on your phone, tablet or laptop within applications to your tv, in short. Hah it rocks. hate giant monopolies though, so..

Wait - showbox shortcoming is the distance from router? Or Chromecast?

At my last poker game, a couple of my tech-savy friends were raving about the Amazon Fire Stick and wondered why anyone would get the Chromecast. I believe they have Amazon Prime which might affect their opinion. I have the Chromecast and just use it to stream Netflix and youtube clips from my iPad to my TV. It works well for those purposes.

I posted about this little wonder a couple weeks ago in the "I want a new TV show" thread I believe. A good friend of mine bought one and loves it. It's basically a wireless link from his PC to his TV. Works excellent from what I saw the last time I was at his house and he was showing it to me. Slick little device.

    Chromecast.

Showbox couples with apptoid for free movies and shows from your laptop or phone or tablet, streamed via Chromecast to the TV..the receiver (Chromecast) cannot be too far from your router in your home, office, etc
