General advice for H2H leagues; you don't necessarily need elite goaltending, as the variation from week-to-week is pretty high for most goalies. All you really need is competent goaltending in a league like yours. Obviously, given that your league is multi-category you want guys who provide contributions to a variety of categories, i.e. in your league, David Backes is probably worth a first round pick. You want to focus mostly on offensive categories from your Forwards, and try to draft Dmen who help out in PIM/Hits/Blks later in your draft. Needless to say, Shea Weber is going to be much better in your format than, say, Duncan Keith. Don't sleep on Dion Phaneuf, he's probably a top3-5 Dman in your setup.

As long as you can get two average starters who are going to get a majority of the workload, you're set in net. Try to get as many legit multi-cat forwards (Lucic, Perry, OV, Getzlaf, Backes, etc.) as you can, but don't sacrifice offense too much, as categories like Hits/Blks/PIM can be had in the late rounds of the draft on your blueline.

    Good luck!

EDIT: If you do one thing and one thing only to prepare for multi-cat H2H; sign up for Fantasy Hockey Geek, create a custom league with your settings, and check out the player rankings. You'll be very glad you did.

ALSO, focus mostly on per-game production from players; don't worry as much about injury prone guys, as long as they're healthy during your H2H playoffs, you're fine.

Well first off, don't sleep on your goalies. You're getting 43% of your scoring categories from 2 goalie positions (this is a pretty large goalie cat distribution for a H2H league). So you want to make sure that you either A) have two solid goalies to ride all year, and likely a 3rd option as well, or B) Draft one great starter and then be prepared to be very active on the waiver wire all season to grab guys for spot starts. I assume this is a daily transaction league... If it's a weekly league then the strategy would be different.

Second, learn to value players differently. In a league like this, a player like Dubinsky or Backes is far far more valuable than someone like David Krejci or Paul Stastny. Your Hit, Block, and PIM categories are just as important as the points categories, so when you're drafting, focus on balancing out all categories with a wide variety of players. A popular strategy is to use your defensemen slots to provide the bulk of your physical cats, while focusing on offense with your forwards. It's a sound strategy, but I personally tend to favour multi-cat forwards while spreading out the offense among more players.

And no more wondering who is the best 1st overall choice. It's Alex Ovechkin.

    Have fun!

Normally, I completely advocate winning H2H with a formidable skater unit... punting goalies until late.

    Here, I'll flip that 180°.
There's 8 skater cats & 6 goalie cats, so heavily goalie weighted.
On top of that, you've got goalie cats GP, W, L.
Assuming losses hurt, you basically want Top Tier Goalies on GREAT Teams because not only do you need GP & W, but you want to avoid L.

If I get a top three pick in this league, I'm still going Crosby, Ovechkin, Stamkos.
But after than, I'd probably switch to Rask & Lundqvist.

If I don't have a top three pick, I'm going Goalie-Goalie with this heavy goalie weighting and trying to take TWO goalies from really good teams:

    1. Rask (BOS)
    2. Lundqvist (NYR)
    3. Crawford (CHI)
    4. Fleury (PIT)
    ...
    5. Quick (LA)
    6. Varlamov (COL)
    ...
If you miss out on these six, look for a timeshare situation:
    ...
    7. Elliott (STL) and late draft Allen (STL)
    8. Andersen (ANA) and late draft Gibson (ANA).
    ...
And if you miss all of these guys still decent value in:
    9. Backstrom (MIN) and Kuemper (MIN).
    ...
If you still totally miss out:
    10. Draft a bunch of back-ups on those first listed good teams.

Don't forget Niemi/Stalock! And I would add Price and Lehtonen under Varlamov.

#10 is an interesting strategy. Do you worry that you might run into some weeks where you're still scrambling for starts? Not to mention the added problem of using 2 or 3 more roster spots on goalies than everyone else.

I would tend to agree with MounD. Assuming daily starts, I would not be spending high draft picks on "elite level goaltending". On a weekly H2H even the best of goalies can have that one game in week the throws their ratios out of whack for one week.

I have had success with 1 proven starter who has a heavy workload, and stream the balance of your starts based on favorable matchups and need. I would much rather take the high picks on proven, more consistent forwards.

You will probably have a pretty good split of opinion on which way to go.

Using the league in my signature, which has similar scoring, team A - Goalies were Lundquist and Bishop squeeked into the playoffs, and was done in round 1. Team B - Rask and Varlamov finished 5th and bowed out in round 1 also. Both mainly due to one or two rough outings from their elite goaltenders. It should be noted that the same GM's have had Rask and Lundquist for the past 3 years... neither of them have made it out of round one.

The league champ last year (my team) had Quick and streaming goalies... The league champ the 2 previous years had Hiller and Miller as his two goalies with various backups as his 3rd.

I realize there is a lot more context needed to be taken into account. But the long and short of it, from my experience, H2H daily starts, spending high picks on goalies is very risky. Especially in the inaugural draft.

As mentioned before, understand the value of players in your league versus the perceived value of players. Get to know the names Gudas, Phaneuf, Simmonds, Dubinsky, Hartnell, Dillon, Girardi, Palat, Brouwer, Wingels.

All of those guys likely have a greater value in your format than most perceive their value to be.

This is by far my favorite style of league. Best of Luck

Good advice Pengy, - my first though once I saw scoring categories is you need to have solid goalies, as it is almost 50% of scoring categories.
Might even be able to grab Holtby as 3rd goalie later in draft.

While I see the reasoning in Penguin's strategy, I firmly believe you can accomplish the same by being diligent with your spot starts.

Im not sure of the league size but say its a 12 team league, and 4 goalies go Rounds 1 & 2, you arguably have your top skater as a 21st ranked player at best.

I can't imagine a team being able to compete based on that. Especially when you take into account goalies (even the Elite ones) variance game to game and week to week.

Daily Start you can be a little more selective in playing specific matchups. Spot starting backup goalies is easier to do, as you only need them on your roster for a day and then you could drop them.

Whereas weekly start, if you start a backup, you may only get 1 start for the week, which would essentially be a waste of a goalie slot. Hence the higher premium on workhorse goalies in weekly start vs. daily.

Just looking for any advice I can get.

    Jeez.
Where did GP go for goalies?

As soon as just one cat changes... so would my strategy... that's one less reason to have a workhorse goalie.
    Hmpf.

Also, in Yahoo!, when it says:
    Weekly Deadline: Daily - Tomorrow.

This means it is a "Daily Set" league.
The "Tomorrow" part just means that your roster must be picked from your group at end of previous day. In simple terms, you can't ADD a guy on Friday and put him in your Friday roster.
If you add a guy Friday, the soonest you can see him on your roster is Saturday.

With a "daily" league, you can really take advantage of back-ups.
I'm reverting to my standard strategy.

Draft high-end skaters, mostly forwards... late draft defense for PIM/HIT/BLK. Robert Bortuzzo, for example.
By the way, a bunch of us have an excellent list of sleepers in Yahoo!... they have soooo many guys pegged incorrectly that you can steal.

If your managers aren't absolutely top tier, we can give you some tips to dominate this league.
With 5 bench slots, I'd try to late draft goalies on good teams in time shares.

You'll win this league with elite skaters though.

    I'm listening 😁

I also purchased the FHG draft kit. I ran the rankings a couple of times using various stats (dobber projections, 3 year average, 2 year average, etc.). Also read the recent articles on how to use these tools. Can you guys provide any advice on how you use the rankings and draft guru?
