Pengwin7 Notes:
Goalies (25). Represents 25 #1 starting goalies. Teams without #1s drafted: WPG, OTT, CAR, EDM, BUF.
Wing-Eligible FOW men (16). There are 13 or 14 (if you count Bryan Little) premium centers that take FOW and can be slotted in a wing. They are overdrafted in Yahoo! leagues with this positional flexibility.
Defensemen (21). There is a premium on across-the-board D-men, with an obvious drop-off in Tier after Karlsson/Subban/Weber/Buff. After Buff at #30, there was a lull until Yandle started a run at #47.
C-Only Centers (19). There are only about 9 ELITE mult-cat centers (Staal #45 last) and 14-15 premium C-Only centers in Yahoo! (Krejci #89 last), IMO. They dry up with GMs drafting the wing-eligible centers to their wing slots. N.B.
Wingers (39).

Pengwin7 Notes
Goalies (20). Includes starters from WPG, OTT, CAR, EDM + 16 back-ups. BUF goalies not selected.
Wing-Eligible FOW men. Not a lot, but could be a few gems here if any of them get top two line minutes at center.
Rookies. Only Drouin & Gaudreau taken. Value is questionable with these picks as neither is likely to put up any FOW, minimal HITS.
Thanks for posting the draft results!
Recchident Evil
C Desharnais, Fisher, Perreault
LW Couture, Pacioretty, J.Staal
RW Neal, Skinner, Callahan
D Byfuglien, Ekman-Larsson, Carlson, Edler, Trouba
G Rask, Luongo
BN M.Jones, Roussel, Raanta, Barkov, Harding
My teams usually end up being fairly poor at C, but this time around I ended up punting C position pretty much entirely. So should be interesting to see how that actually works out. I was more or less planning to pick up one C in rounds 6-10 and another in 10-12, but I never felt that Cs available were good choices compared to other positions at any point in the draft. After Hanzal went in the 11th round, I felt none of the remaining Cs available were much better than what would likely be available in the last few rounds/as FA so decided to completely punt the C position. I also decided to not stock up on FOW-taking wingers that much as I felt it would be more cost effective to pick up only 1 or maybe 2 FOW-taking wingers and target above average finish in FOW than to get 3-4 such players which would be needed to finish Top3 in FOW.
1. (6) Tuukka Rask (Bos - G)
Ideally I would have gotten Giroux here, but that was probably a pipe dream to start with. Pretty easy decision to go with Rask as I think he's by far the best goalie available and pretty much in his own tier at the moment as far as I am considered. Going with Rask should also allow me to wait a bit on 2nd G and someone like Halak, Holtby, Luongo or Bernier should be enough with Rask.
2. (19) Logan Couture (SJ - C,LW)
FOW-taking wingers are really valuable in this league and especially when you combine that with good scoring totals. Some might consider taking Couture this early a slight reach, but I am pretty high on Couture and had him ranked 2LW after Benn so very happy to get top-tier winger.
3. (30) Dustin Byfuglien (Wpg - RW,D)
I feel dmen are undervalued even in this league and was happy to get Top5 D with my 3rd round pick. Byfuglien will likely play forward though so I have to make sure the rest of the dmen I pick will compensate for the lack of blocks.
4. (43) Max Pacioretty (Mon - LW)
Best winger available. Considered picking up 2nd D with Chara or Phaneuf, but felt those two would likely still last a round or two.
5. (54) James Neal (Nsh - LW,RW)
Hoped I would get Kesler here, but no such luck so went with the best winger available. I feel Neal is getting slightly undervalued at the moment and I expect Neal to still stay as Top10 winger with our categories.
6. (67) Roberto Luongo (Fla - G)
Halak went and Holtby has been selected previous round so only Luongo and Bernier were left of the goalies I would be comfortable as 2G. So picked up Luongo who in combination with Rask should end up as one of the better goalie tandems in the league.
7. (78) Oliver Ekman-Larsson (Ari - D)
Wanted Giordano, but Pengwin7 picked him up under my nose so went with the next best D on my list.
8. (91) Jeff Skinner (Car - LW,RW)
Had Edler as the best available player left, but I felt I could let him slide few rounds after absolutely disastrous last season. I hoped to get some decent C around this spot, but felt none of the available Cs were worth the pick so went once again with the best winger available.
9. (102) Ryan Callahan (TB - RW)
Would have picked Andersen if he had been available, but he went the in the previous round. Edler would probably slide few more rounds so went with Callahan who I felt was pretty solid value in the 9th round.
10. (115) John Carlson (Was - D)
Close decision between Carlson, Edler and Hanzal. I really needed D with high blocks to compensate for Byfuglien and felt Edler wold very likely still be available, but it might have been better decision to go with Hanzal.
11. (126) Alexander Edler (Van - D)
The last C who I really wanted in Hanzal went just 3 picks before my selection so pretty much decided to punt whole C position as didn't feel rest of the Cs were much better than what would be available in the last few rounds/FA. So picked Edler as didn't want to miss on him by waiting too long.
12. (139) Jacob Trouba (Wpg - D)
Wanted another D to shore up blocks and went with the best on my list in Trouba. This meant that I had full lineup of 5 D already though and that's probably not a good idea as there are usually plenty of good value D picks available and some of the Top30 Ds on my list were still available in in rounds 14-18 so probably shouldn't have picked full 5 D this early.
13. (150) Jordan Staal (Car - C,LW)
Was technically the best C available, but I wanted FOW-taking winger and Staal was one of the very few worthwhile such players left.
14. (163) Martin Jones (LA - G)
Wanted backup who would post quality numbers when playing and picked up Jones who should post pretty good numbers when gets to play.
15. (174) Antoine Roussel (Dal - LW)
My team was a bit low on PIM so picked up Roussel so I could switch him in to get PIM/Hits boost without losing too much scoring.
16. (187) David Desharnais (Mon - C)
Round 16 and I finally selected my 1st center. Was mostly looking for A, FOW and +/- to a some degree and Desharnais should be decent enough for that as long as keeps playing with Pacioretty.
17. (198) Mike Fisher (Nsh - C)
Is injured, but is a solid player in this format and I can stash him in the IR in the meantime.
18. (211) Antti Raanta (Chi - G)
Was pretty poor last season, but CHI is probably the best team in the league so should post some good W-rate and GAA on per game basis as long can manage even league average SV%.
19. (222) Aleksander Barkov (Fla - C)
I punted C position so might as well pick up one or two young Cs who have a chance of breaking out and ending up decent Cs like Johansen from last season as an example.
20. (235) Mathieu Perreault (Wpg - C)
Just a filler C who might be worth a roster spot, but could easily end up in waiver wire pretty soon.
21. (246) Josh Harding (Min - G)
Injured and likely to miss a quite significant part of the season. All I want is 10-15 quality starts and Harding has usually posted solid numbers whenever he has played between injuries. I can also slot him in the IR for the time being.
As for the other teams, I like Briere Witch Project, Ogie Ogre-thorpe, House of 1000 Corvos best and Pengwin7's BranStamkers Backula features strong skaters so could finish pretty high if manages to end with even average in goalie categories. Most teams are within 10 pts in my projections though so it's pretty hard to say there's that much of difference between the teams as far as I can see.
My team: Duchenesaw Massacre
C: Backes, Thornton, Kesler
LW: O'Reilly, Hartnell, Ladd
RW: Ovechkin, Oshie, Eriksson
D: Streit, Yandle, Rielly, Muzzin, Campbell
G: Bishop, Andersen
B: Khudobin, Lehner, Pavelec, Svedberg, Tanguay
Not much time for analysis at the moment - but obviously have some issues around points production, sog and blocks. Think it is a mid to top half of the field team as it sits and need to get to work ASAP to move up.
My team - House of 1000 Corvos
C - Tavares, Kadri, Brassard
RW - Seguin (C), St Louis, Gaborik, Grabovski (C), Hemsky
LW - Marleau (C), Datsyuk (C), Palat
D - Hedman, Ehrhoff, McDonagh, Hamilton, McQuaid
G - Fleury, Niemi, Bernier, Stalock, Reimer
I had half of a round by round analysis wrote when my computer decided to restart. So I'm just going to do a quick and dirty version instead.
I was stoked that so many managers targeted goalies with their first two picks. In my opinion, there is no way that Quick, Varlamov and Price should go before Seguin this year. The first 7 picks went roughly how I expected, and I was targeting Seguin at #9, then smack took Quick (not a bad pick at all) which left Tavares still available. When Seguin was still there for my next pick at 16, I was stoked!
So I decided to target two goalies with my next picks. I was leaning towards the Fleury/Crawford combo that kept me near the top of the pack last year. Got Fleury in round 3 but Crawford was snagged before I could grab him. Niemi is a great consolation prize even though I was tempted to pick Rinne. With the Penguins and Sharks though, I should definitely be competitive for the Ws with solid peripherals.
Marleau, Datsyuk, St Louis, Ehrhoff and Gaborik are great offensive options who fell while the focus was on multi-cat guys. I'm lacking sandpaper but drafted all these guys later than I felt they should be available. Grit should be easy to come by later on the WW with the drop from 14 teams to 12 this year.
I think Brassard (15), Grabovski (17) and Hemsky (18) could all prove to be value picks.
Grabbing Stalock and Reimer as handcuffs late was quite a nice surprise. I planned on drafting 5 goalies anyway, but to snag two tandems is a sweet. I think a lot of teams are going to be hurting later in the year for goaltending. Not as much as in previous years, but it will still be at a premium.

All in all, this is shaping up to be a crazy competitive season. It was awesome to have a full turn out for the draft and I can't wait to see how things shake out.
Good luck everyone! And if anyone is looking to trade some multi-cat guys for offensive upgrades, hit me up.
Without me, it's only "aweso".
My team: Fransonstein
C: Crosby, Spezza, Anisimov
LW: Pavelski, Sharp, Schwartz
RW: Kessel, Okposo, Eberle, Heatley
D: Kronwall, Franson, Gudas, Stuart, Dillon,
G: Holtby, Anderson
BN: Filppula, Zuccarello, Lindholm, Ward
My goalies are an issue but I feel like the rest of my team contributes pretty evenly to the other categories. I was hoping to stack up on guys who get goals and play on the powerplay as well as take a significant amount of shots. I felt pretty prepared going into the draft and the hardest part was trying to figure out when the other GM's would be taking players that I wanted. There were a couple of times where my entire queue was depleted and I was left thinking real hard. Notable moment: Dubinsky and Hartnell.
1. (1) Sidney Crosby (Pit - C) - Don't think there is a better pick in this position!
2.(24) Joe Pavelski (SJ - C,LW) - Honestly didn't think he would fall this far and even with some talks of regression I am still happy to have a guy who could surpass 30-35G and rack up some severe power play points for me and some great FOW on his side of the ice.
3.(25) Phil Kessel (Tor - RW) - There were some GREAT goalies available right here but for some reason I didn't really grasp how far away my next picks were and didn't think about the fact that they would all be gone - Kessel was kind of a scramble pick however, he will hopefully push 35G again and shoot over or close to 300 shots - Maybe the leafs will get it together overall and improve his value even more!
4.(48) Patrick Sharp (Chi - C,LW) - I think Sharp has another solid season in him. The addition of Richards I believe will be helpful as well.
5.(49) Braden Holtby (Was - G) - Well I arrived at this pick with very few goalies in sight and honestly screamed the word **** when I saw that Elliot was taken a couple spots after I grabbed Holtby. I should have gone G/G here but at the time Sharp/Holtby seemed like the best scenario for me. Can't believe Elliot wasn't on my radar, frig.
6.(72) Jason Spezza (Dal - C) - On an improved team and a line possibly with Hemsky on the wing I think Spezza could have an incredible year (or an absolutely terrible one) so felt like this may have been a risky pick but glad to add another C like him at this point.
7.(73) Niklas Kronwall (Det - D) - I figured guys like this would be going FAST and wondered how soon Giordano would be gone. Kronwall is basically a 100 sog/hit/blk guy which I like and he should be able to bring in some PP for me on defense.
8.(96) Kyle Okposo (NYI - RW) - Love the potential of a full season with JT.
9.(97) Valtteri Filppula (TB - C,LW) - Needed FOW from the wing, seemed like a decent pick.
10.(120) Jordan Eberle (Edm - RW) - Eberle was hanging around for a while and it felt like a good time to grab him, hoping the Oil can pull together this year.
11.(121) Radko Gudas (TB - D) - Wasn't sure where everyone had him so decided to add this beast now.
12.(144) Craig Anderson (Ott - G) - I was pretty rattled at this point with my goalie situation and looked through every other teams picks and honestly thought "I literally am going to have the shittiest goalies in this league" and to cement that statement, I drafted Anderson!
13.(145) Cody Franson (Tor - D) - Like Franson but don't like his +/- , maybe he can clean it up this year if his buddy Phaneuf stops disappointing Leaf's fans!
14.(168) Mark Stuart (Wpg - D) - Had him in the 100pim, 200hit section for D and thought I would fill my 3rd spot and then see what was left near the end.
15.(169) Cam Ward (Car - G) - Maybe he can finally live up to the expectations?
16.(192) Jaden Schwartz (StL - LW) - Thought Schwartz was a good offensive pick at this point
17.(193) Artem Anisimov (Cls - C,LW) - Was looking for some FOW for the wing (Problem now is that none of my RW'ers take FO's!
18.(216) Mats Zuccarello (NYR - LW) - Hoping he can build off of last season and shoot, hit and score more.
19.(217) Brenden Dillon (Dal - D) - Big numbers where I felt I was lacking so grabbed my final D.
20.(240) Dany Heatley (Anh - LW,RW) - Wanted another RW so banking on the chance that he connects on the top line for more than 2 games!
21.(241) Hampus Lindholm (Anh - D) - Last pick, hoping for some serious progression!
I love, love, love all the new team names!
Who is gonna throw out a full prediction list?
I want to see me bottom half so I can beat my prediction spot!
Thanks to temek for the full draft list, I'm going to colour-code for fun!!!
My Team: The Briere Witch Project
C: Toews, Vermette (C/LW), Bonino, Soderberg (C/LW)
LW: Steen (C/LW), B.Schenn (C/LW), Cammalleri (C/LW), Marchand
RW: MacKinnon (C/RW), Carter (C/RW), Saad (LW/RW), Downie (LW/RW)
D: Letang, Doughty, Suter, Bieksa, Garrison, Barrie
G: Lundqvist, Schneider, C.Talbot
My Draft Strategy: I always like to paraphrase the words of the late, great Herb Brooks when he put together the 1980 US Olympic team to my drafting strategy…”I’m not looking for the best players, I’m looking for the right players”. On the whole, I believe this was the most talented and prepared set of GMs assembled in any draft I’ve participated in (including previous Dobber Pro/Expert drafts). In drafts like this, you really need to pull the trigger on a player you want at least a round or two earlier than is normally the case or he just isn’t going to be there. While I normally don’t ‘tier’ players, I do group certain players together that I consider ‘similar’ in terms of their stats/categories – that way, I don’t need to spend any time scrambling through a list/queue looking for players. If I don’t make a pick within 3 seconds, I haven’t done my job! I can then spend time my time adjusting for category needs and observing the other GMs’ tendencies (which will help me in future drafts with these sharks). Finally, settling in with a quality beer (in this case I broke out the Pearl Necklace Oyster Stout) and enjoying the experience is truly what it's all about!
Knowing my draft position (7) in advance, and knowing that none of the truly elite skaters would be there by my turn, my strategy would focus on building strength based on positional scarcity in goal and on and defense. This includes:
1. Drafting the best goalie combination possible. In my experience, when you compete against savvy GMs, strong goaltending is the key to victory. With both quantity (Wins and Saves) and ratio (GAA, Save %) scoring stats in this league, getting quality, starting goalies will be critical for me.
2. Overall balance – get skaters that will contribute across the board in as many categories as possible (particularly on defense) – while avoiding those skaters that are ‘category killers’ or 'one hit wonders'. This includes drafting centers with wing eligibility to fill up my wing positions.
3. Finding ‘hidden value’ – much more difficulty when you’re competing against competition like this…but when the big names are flying off the board, you need to take a chance or two on players who are in a good position to rebound.
Rounds and my picks:
1. (7) Henrik Lundqvist (NYR - G)
2. (18) Cory Schneider (NJD - G)
With 31% of my scoring categories coming from my 2 goalie positions, barring a catastrophic injury, I’m well set in this area and can focus on balance across the board. I may have reached a bit with Schneider but New Jersey is giving him the keys to car this year and he’ll get lots of starts and will put up very solid numbers.
3. (31) Jonathan Toews (CHI - C)
In most drafts, I tend not to focus on centers as they’re a dime a dozen. In this league however, centers are king and getting a quality one is a necessity. Toews isn’t sexy, but he’s as solid and consistent as they come and with my first forward I want someone I can bank on.
4. (42) Nate MacKinnon (COL – C/RW)
One of the few times in this draft I actually got the guy I wanted when I wanted him. I think he potentially has the most upside of any forward this year and as as center, playing him on my roster as a wing is pure gold.
5. (55) Kris Letang (PIT - D)
My big risk/reward pick. An elite defenseman when healthy. He’s still the quarterback on the Penguins PP and he’ll contribute across the board. If he plays 70 games I’m a genius...40 games and I’m a doofus.
6. (66) Jeff Carter (LAK – C/RW)
I wanted either Carter or Kesler this round and when Kesler was taken last round my decision was easy - Get Carter! Carter’s one of those rare shoot first centers with W eligibility.
7. (79) Drew Doughty (LAK - D)
A solid contributor on D. Expectations generally exceed (his scoring) output yet he consistently puts up numbers across the board.
8. (90) Alexander Steen (STB – C/LW)
Dual-eligible, plays with solid linemates. The fat man loves him and rewards him with big minutes. Always a bit of injury risk but I can manage it with the forwards I'm drafting.
9. (103) Antoine Vermette (PHO – C/LW)
While there were ‘sexier’ picks available, I didn’t want to sit any longer on this one with those gaudy FOW my fellow GMs are looking at. An underrated roto stud in this scoring format – he contributes across the board, plays big minutes, and he DOMINATES with FOW (with LW eligibility to boot).
10. (114) Ryan Suter (MIN - D)
As my #3 defenseman, a solid value pick. Like Doughty, somewhat underrated but a steady contributor. My defense is shaping up nicely.
11. (127) Brayden Schenn (PHL – C/LW)
A solid roto contributor with the upside of playing on Claude Giroux’s wing. This is his breakout year. (Yeah, I'm hoping!)
12. (138) Kevin Bieksa (VAN - D)
A roto monster on D (when healthy) who’ll see first unit PP time this year. Only 3 defenders should get over 25 PTS, have at least 90 PIMs, and 90 BLKs: Subban, Phaneuf, Bieksa. Bieska is the best value pick of the three. As my 4th d-man, I’m really liking my defense.
13. (151) Brandon Saad (CHI – RW/LW)
Young, with upside, and will skate on one of Chicago’s top 2 lines. Also nice having dual-eligibility at wing to cope with the inevitable injuries to the lineup.
14. (162) Jason Garrison (TBL - D)
He’s got a cannon and shoots it a lot. On Tampa’s PP, he’ll definitely improve on his numbers from last year. Another nice across-the-board contributor on D. As my 5th and final defenseman, I’ve assembled a truly, solid back-end.
15. (175) Mike Cammalleri (NJD – C/LW)
I was hoping to snag Roussel this round to address some PIM needs (and I wanted another LW), but he went right before my pick. So, I went to plan B and added some goal scoring instead. (IMO, I see PIMs, along with HITS as the easier categories to make up in a pinch.) Cammalleri ended up in a great place with the Devils – they need goal scoring and he’ll get that opportunity and see significant PP time.
16. (186) Brad Marchand (BOS - LW)
A nice insurance pick at LW – an all-around contributor I can plug in when needed.
17. (199) Tyson Barrie (COL - D)
For my bench strategy I target either insurance or opportunity. Barrie gives me both – he’ll be a nice replacement if/when Letang (or another D) gets injured and he definitely has upside with all that firepower in COL. A really nice bench asset for my defense.
18. (210) Cam Talbot (NYR - G)
My Lundqvist insurance policy (long live the King!) – plus he’ll put up solid numbers when he fills in.
19. (223) Steve Downie (PIT - LW/RW)
My PIM make-up selection. I actually see some upside with Dowine in PIT. At worse, he’ll get 3rd line minutes and potentially could see occasional time on the one of the first two lines or 2nd PP as he’s a complimentary player to the skilled players.
20. (234) Nick Bonino (VAN - C)
A depth pick that I can slot in as needed in a third line role. As the 2nd line center in VAN he’ll see significant minutes, get 50 pts and be able to contribute to my FOW. Not too shabby for a 234th pick.
21. (246) Carl Soderberg (BOS – C/LW)
He’ll improve on his numbers from last year – a smart, skilled guy on a solid team playing for a contract…and I can slot him at C or LW when needed.
Given the level of competition in this league, I very pleased I was able to accomplish my draft goals. It was interesting to watch the other strategies unfold – everyone brought their ‘A’ game to this draft. In summary, I believe I have (arguably) the best goalie combination along with quality defensive depth…and I have good balance with my skaters across the scoring categories. I have assets and depth if I need to trade to bolster any weaknesses that may develop. My team may not be sexy, but it's as solid as they come. I see my team as the wife in the Jimmy Soul song:
"If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty women your wife
Go for my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you!
Dude 1:Say man...
Dude 2:Hey man...
Dude 1: I saw your wife (my team) the other day...
Dude 2: Yeah...
Dude 1: Yeah and shes ugly...
Dude 2: Yeah shes ugly but she sure can cook baby.
Dude 1: Yeah!"
We'll see if this team can cook. Good luck boys!

I guess I might as well post standings predictions based on my projections. Keep in mind that I drafted based on these numbers so I would need to mess the draft up completely to not have my team at the top by a decent margin. Plenty of teams within fairly small margins so should be interesting to see how the standings shape up during the season. Few teams are nowhere near the 164 GP limit with the current goalies so those teams would probably do better assuming they can get the starts, but projections don't account for that. There are quite few backups available as FA so getting to 164 GP shouldn't really be a big problem, but would require activity with picking up goalies to do that.

Just for reference some analysis of my projections from last season compared to the final results. Pts predictions are a bit all over the place, but 6 teams finished within 1 spot of the predicted position and 13 out of 14 teams finished within 2 spots of the predicted position. Based on my experiences of predicting fantasy league standings that's an extremely good prediction. Could be just good luck over one season though so should be interesting to see how well this season's projections match the actual results.

Those are pretty incredible draft predictions even for last year.
Of course, we lost a couple teams to inactivity and that can really mess up the rankings.
I know Army of Subbans just about checked out mid-year... and Stams (Dyz) got swamped with school and missed a bunch of starts.
Me & Shoeless are surely proud to both exceed expectations from last year.
Both of us were benefactors of an incredible rich back-up stats year for goalies.
Still amazed that Shoe pulled off a nearly 90% rake on available points last year... as normally the 150pts your team put up would win a 14-team league in 4 of 5 seasons (I'd bet, by math).
I don't mind being pegged anywhere near the masses.
One of my best (self-noted) skills is chasing teams down in categories, identifying what & who I can catch and maximizing assets.
Any chance you can break these down by:
*Skater Points
*Goalie Points
I guess I can post Skater/Goalie breakdown. Not going to post category-by-category breakdown as that's just giving up too much information and I want to win this league after all.
