Default Draisaitl to Europe if he doesn't stick with the team?

    http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2...itl-to-europe/

According to TSN 1260 radio’s Dean Millard, there are rumbling that should Draisaitl — the third overall selection at the draft — not make the NHL club, he’ll possibly be sent to play in Europe, rather than return to Canadian junior hockey with the WHL’s Prince Albert Raiders.

Good decision if it puts him against better competition. Should help his development.......

But I think he's going to make the team. Cheers.

Slim chance he doesn't make the Oilers anyways.

However, he was drafted out of the CHL, so he'd have a really tough time not being forced to play back in that league. Yakupov had a clause to go back to the KHL due to his age when he signed in the CHL (he was 17), but not sure if that would apply to Draisaitl or not.

I thought the Yakupov thing had to do with the lockout? That if they assigned him back to junior in October then he couldn't play for the Oilers til his junior season ended? Am I making that up in my head or...?

Galchenyuk played for Sarnia during the lock-out, then suited up for the Habs when the conflict ended. Yakupov played in the KHL, then dressed for the Oilers after the lock-out.

Ryan O'Reilly had to go through waivers had the Colorado Avalanches not match the Calgary Flames offer sheet during the lock-out.

Just by typing that, I am confused.

I don't have an issue with him playing in Europe if he doesn't make the Oilers. That being said, I think the 2C spot is his to lose heading into camp.

Would be a little anti climactic if he doesn't win that 2C role this year.

The Oilers have a long history of rushing their prospects though. So it will also depend on whether they have learned their lesson or not. If they have they'll find a 2C from elsewhere, otherwise Draisaitl will be on the team

One of these years, the Oilers will learn their lesson.. They probably should have grabbed Legwand this year to play 2C..

Considering his salary, I would agree. That being said, I would also be surprised if they hadn't reached out to his camp and was turned down knowing the history Edmonton has had bringing in FA's.

Oilers aside, how often do #3 overall forward draft picks start the NHL after they are drafted.

    Drouin - No
    Galchenyuk - Yes
    Huberdeau - Yes
    Duchene - Yes
    Turris - Yes
    Toews - No
    Horton - Yes

So, that's the past 10 years. Only 2 of those guys didn't start in the NHL, so it's not exactly an Edmonton Oiler situation with that particular pick. At that spot you are getting a highly talented individual that has good chances of being ready to go at the NHL level.

However, an interesting question could be SHOULD those guys have started right away? That's a whole other discussion.

Crazy to think that Toews didn't jump right in! He was more NHL-ready than all them put together

Or is the fact that they didn't put him in right away the reason he was able to make the transition so smoothly.. Hmmmm..
