Interesting points by Pengwin to get the ball-rolling. It sure seems like one hell of bold strategy to:

1. buy a hockey team
2. purposefully lose millions upon millions to;
3. be allowed to relocate said team which requires;
4. relocation fees, buying out a lease and other large expenses; all so
5. you can have a hockey team in Seattle/LV/QC City which you then sell for a large profit to an actual hockey fan??

I think the biggest hurdle is getting Gary Bettman to admit he was wrong. Bettman has done a lot of good for the NHL financially. His big push was to get into major US markets, regardless of geography. He has fought tooth and nail to keep the Coyotes in Arizona as long as he has and he seems certain to insist they stay. Ironically, he allowed the Thrashers to leave a much larger city with relatively little fight. It seems more likely now then ever that the Panthers could move but the odds of it happening are still not great.

Atlanta may be a bigger city, but (don't quote me on this) I am pretty sure from the Coyotes battles I remember reading that they are one of the largest TV markets in the country. Like #4 or #5 or something stupid high. That is the main reason Bettman fought so hard for the Phoenix market. IF they can make it work, the potential TV market is so huge.

What annoys me regarding the Florida situation is that owners and whatnot say "oh, the team isn't profitable", when they also own the arena and if you count concessions, conserts and all that, you're standing on a goldmine. But the team is still needed to get that arena. They're not the only team to do that. It's just cooking the books. Happens everywhere, just as annoying every time.

This is why I put very little stock in these guys saying it isn't profitable, or they are losing money etc. Everyone is going to say that and they have the accountants to back it up too right?

No NHL owner is actually losing money in the NHL. Maybe on an HRR standpoint, but there are a lot of revenue streams owners make that aren't included in HRR (such as concessions).

Pengwin i stay clear of this thread mainly cause i just don´t think your theory is right. I needed to clarify the reason why Yormack was let go was that the guy qwas a jerk in the first place he is the most hated guy in the fanbase since he entered the franchise, he put up so many crappy PR stunts its not even funny. THere was no way he was able to stay in the franchise without a boatload of hate coming VIolas way. The dude mismanaged bascially everything PR-related that was possible. Go to any Panthers board instert his name and have fun!

Oh, it's very unlikely my theory is correct.
But... I do think there is an inkling there... enough to put down the thoughts.

The interesting part about Yormark is this: If he's a jerk... and everybody knows it... then how would he get a job with Jay-Z's company unless he has a good recommendation straight from Jay Z's bud, Viola?

So now a corollary for you:
If a) Yormark = jerk.
And b) Viola vouches for Yormark.

So if the panthers do badly, they’ll have Hubes, Barkov, Ekblad, and MacDavid/Eichel to build around. Then they relocate to a new city, which would sell out often due to having similar outlines as the Jets (must sell so many tickets for 5 yrs as a condition). They’d have a young team, that would play motivated in a crazy hockey town, and the fans would be willing to wait a yr or two for improvement.

I read the other thread and was like, “I should bump this and see what happens” lol. I actually think this is a cool theory. Out of all failing teams, the Panthers are the most likely to move. Even when they’ve been winning they have no attendance. These owners can go a yr with not turning a profit if it means turning one in 2 yrs. However, I can see a team tanking for MacDavid, not tanking to move. If it was a bad draft yr, it would be more believable.
