I personally like Smith here, but Dallas Guzzwell just wrote an article about sleeper picks, and Maroon was on it. Smith would still be my pick though.

    Sig league?

    Some quick projections:

    Maroon
    15 goals (45)
    23 assists (46)
    120 PIMs (60)
    150 Hits (37.5)
    6 PPP (6)
    +15 (15)
    Total Fantasy Points: 209.5

    Smith
    25 goals (75)
    30 assists (60)
    30 PIMs (15)
    50 Hits (12.5)
    15 PPP (15)
    +15 (15)
    Total Fantasy Points: 192.5

My initial reaction was Smith as he's safer for offence but I think if Maroon can even put up modest offensive numbers his peripheral stats will push him over the top. He can have sneaky value if he slips into that 1LW role with Getz and Perry.

Sorry, I always think points are more important than anything else, and forget that in multi-cat leagues PIM and hits can level things out. Still believe Smith will improve on his offensive numbers this season, and is the safer bet.

In a regular multicat I want points, because they are harder to come by. In fantasy points though, where all the categories are assigned point values and lumped in together for a total, it doesn't matter at all whether a player gets 100 fantasy points because he got 50 assists, or he gets 100 fantasty points because he got 200 PIMs. 100 fantasy points is 100 fantasy points regardless of where it comes from.

Drives me nuts when I get offers in fantasy points leagues trying to sell me on the virtues of a 1.45 FPG guy because he gets lots of PPP...sure, and he gets half a FPG less than Ryan Reaves, who costs me a fifth as much salary, and was free on the waiver wire.

I think a lot depends on your league managers and how they value certain players. If offense first tend to be favoured, then I would go Smith first and perhaps you can get Maroon later. Understanding on how the scoring affects certain players, especially those who could contribute more in the peripherals than on offense, could give you a big advantage.

As above, in a fantasy points league it does not matter where the points come from - the totals are all that matters. But understanding perceived value can set you apart from other managers.
