The Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday signed defenseman Andre Benoit to a one-year contract, according to multiple media reports.

Benoit, 30, is a left-shooting defenseman who had seven goals, 28 points and 26 penalty minutes in 79 regular-season games for the Colorado Avalanche in 2013-14. He also had one point and six penalty minutes in seven Stanley Cup Playoff games.

In 120 NHL games with the Avalanche and Ottawa Senators, Benoit has 10 goals, 39 points and 40 penalty minutes.

Surprised ther Sabres got him so cheap - he wasn't great for Colorado, but he was reasonably useful.

It might have unlocked the dead bolt, but he still needs to open it.

Johnson, Barrie (upon signing), Stuart, Hejda, Wilson, Holden all seem like locks. 7th spot is between Guenin, Redmond, Noreau and Elliot.

I don't think anyone who follows the Avs ever expected Benoit to re-sign there.

Even without him though, there are 5-6 guys all fighting for one roster spot, so it's still ugly for anyone hoping to be the Avs 6/7 defenceman.

With all the one way contracts on the Avs d, I don't see Elliott getting in at the start. Roy thinks Redmond will do what Holden did last year. Wilson isn't a fit in his system and would appear to be on the way out with the fourth largest cap hit and only one year to UFA status. But even then it will be tough for Elliott to break through unless he makes a big impression at training camp.

I actually was surprised it took this long for him to land a deal. The guy was the 2nd most used Dman in Colorado last year for total icetime per game. He played a very important part of their success last year and I am surprised they let him walk considering this. He was pretty solid for them.

I believe that seeing Barrie play the way he did in the last half of the season and playoffs showed management he was ready for a top 4 role, and basically him and Holden replace Benoit on the PP. Plus with adding Richmond and Stuart, both bigger bodies, he was expendable even with how well he played. Hopefully he can keep a fulltime job with Buffalo.
