    Chris Phillips.

    Joke.

Mike Hoffman may not make it through waivers once again, but who knows? Lots of teams already have a Hoffman. He will be in tough to make the Sens.

Exactly. I can't see any gm in their right mind trading for ohlund.

Ohlund might be good for a team that's just trying to get to the cap floor. He hasn't played since 10/11 so he isn't going to take up a roster spot and bump guys down the depth chart but still help a team reach the goal of just hitting the minimum cap.

problem is that teams trying to reach the floor can just go out and sign a player

GMs are finally wising up, and it is shocking it took this long, and realizing that instead of giving teams back value in a trade and allowing them to dump salary and clear cap space they should be charging those teams in order to take the contracts off of their hands

of course at the end of the day in this particular instance TB can LTIR him and get the cap space back

My point which maybe could have been made more clear is that I could only see him ever moved to a team that's just trying to reach the floor. Personally I can't see a team doing that type of move and you're right LTIR is the route TB will take again.

We've seen that strategy deployed every so often with some success. The one I can think of most recently is when the Preds traded Lombardi + Franson for Lebda then bought Lebda out right after. They dumped Lombari's salary but paid a hefty price giving up Franson (who up until then wasn't exactly a mainstay on the Preds blue line)

I didnt realize Ohlund hadn't been playing, but in hindsight it makes sense cause I haven't seen his name in a box score in forever. I was just checking up on Capgeek and had an "oh, he still plays for them?!" moment. LTIR is for sure the route.

I assume it's identical to the Pronger and Savard situations in that if he retires, he counts against the cap, but if he just hangs out on LTIR and grabs his paycheques then all is well!

actually if either Ohlund or Savard retired there would be no cap implications at all as they were not 35+ when their contracts were signed, the reason they don't want to retire is that they would not be getting paid

Pronger is an over 35+ contract so he is the one that would give the Flyers a problem if he retired

i am sorry apparently there are recapture penalties involved with both Savard and Ohlund so i was wrong there would be cap implications

Good addition, but he would clear waivers easily IMO, at this point. But interesting to note

Simon Despres - should be regular D-man with the Pens next season but will become waiver eligible.
Philip Samuelsson - Former 2nd round pick is on the cusp of becoming NHL'er and will be waiver eligible next season. If he won't make the Pens, some team should be giving him a chance then.

    As for non-Pens players:

    Tim Erixon
    Jeremy Morin
    Brandon Pirri
    Richard Panik

Found another interesting player: NYI Matt Donovan. He needs to clear waivers before being sent down to AHL.

With Gudlevski and Vasilevskly waiting in the wings, your right, good bye Nabokov but your dreaming if Tampa trades for Markstrom.

Not even a question he stays with the Ducks this year. Only reason he was sent down last year was because he didn't have to go on waivers.
