    Default High Risk/High Reward

I've always tended to take player who perhaps had a lower ceiling but with more guaranteed points in the past to help my teams, but I'm in a rebuild now and seem to keep reading that Dobber prefers to take chances on guys who are more high risk/high reward- "But I'm all aboard the Ho-Sang train - boom or bust, I'm all about the high risk/high reward"

So he's started to sway my thinking.

I'd like to add one or two to my team and would prefer not to have to wait 3-4+ years for them to arrive so I'm looking for suggestions.

    Maybe-

    The boom/bust guys are everywhere.
Connor Brown and Dane Fox are two who have entered fantasy radars this year. Reid Boucher did so in similar fashion the year before.
Anthony Duclair was once seen as a top 15 pick in the 2013 draft, fell to the 3rd round (injuries, inconsistency etc) and then blew up this year and came 3rd in QMJHL MVP voting (behind Mantha and Drouin)
There's the boom/bust that comes with a lot of Russians recently... Slepyshev, Buchnevich, Kamenev to name a few. Goldobin also falls into this category but for different reasons.
Spencer Watson is a guy from this years draft who has massive scoring potential but he's pretty scrawny and very weak so he has a lot of work to do. Then again people used to say Pearson was pretty weak and he turned out fine for the Kings so far...
There's the smaller guys - the Gaudreau's, Petan's, Bjorkstrand's, Point's, De Leo's of the world. Guys with immense hockey skill but that would blow away if you sneezed too hard. On D in the same category you have Jordan Subban. He's thicker than the rest of them but he's short.

The boom/bust guys are everywhere but hopefully this is a little help.

Joey Hishon if he makes the Avs roster out of camp.

Could end up playing with some mix of McGinn/Mitchell/Briere/Tanguay. Avs have the forward depth to roll three scoring lines and Hishon looked great in the playoffs playing sheltered minutes.

Any band-aid boy is pretty much high-risk, high-reward. Gaborik, Havlat, etc.

Right now, the biggest high-risk high-reward guy is probably Weiss. Lots of injuries, a couple of bad years, but still a big enough contract that he has a decent shot at the #2 centre in Detroit.

I think the main idea in a rebuild to go for high risk high reward is that you have all the time in the world to throw all the darts you want. If you manage to hit on a few of them, you have something to build around you likely got out of a low round pick or an FA pickup.

When you're competing, you want to lower that risk and go for the safer options, because you're just looking to supplement you assets, instead of trying to make magic out of sawdust. While in a rebuild (then the format allows to take more chances, like a fair farm system with enough slots and a decent GP limit), you just want to find what those assets are. While your 1st round picks are usually lower in risk and give you a good start of a foundation, you can use those cheaper picks and FA adds while you wait for them to try and find that lucky break and add another asset. You don't have the pressure of "winning today" on your shoulders. Just the pressure of "build this to a winner".

I know you asked for actual names, but like most said - guys who have a had career highs and just can't seem to replicate that. Green is one example. Or guys who are always injured, or who would be between making the NHL as a top 6 forward or AHL time. You can also try for those high upside prospects whose window to not be termed a bust is closing quick and could be had at a discount - Markstrom for example. I just figured maybe putting some reasoning behind the concept could help you make your own strategy and opinion.

You guys mean low risk, high reward, right? High risk would be if you wasted an early draft pick on him. No one is wasting an early draft pick on these guys. These guys are late picks and therefore low risk. Just saying...

Edit: Or I'm just too caught up in poker return-on-investment thinking. Injuries are a risk, of course. Meh. I still say these are only high risk if you're wasting good draft picks (or players in trades) on them knowing that they're band-aid boys. If you can have them for a song, there's no risk involved.

I own some of these guys, but wouldn't mind owning the rest.

    agree with TJ Brennan.
Josh Anderson for CBJ (low risk/high reward)
Boucher for NJD (low risk/high reward).
Grigorenko (high risk/high reward, but we all know that)
    Jiri Sekac on MTL
    Bogdan Yakimov in EDM.
Ville Husso in STL (might be too long of a wait)
    Peter Holland in TO.
    Mike Rielly in CBJ.
    Erik Haula in Minny.

    I'm sure there's a lot more, but it's a start.
