Still wondering how I would counter with one of my own, but I found this post pretty interesting. Good money spent at C and at D and G, clearly the most important positions. I think a solid backup might cost you more than 1M, but in a 3-year window maybe not (depending on the age of the goalie). This kind of exercise is fun bc it shows you where a certain person would allocate cash, versus another. You went real cheap on the wings at L3 and L4 and I wouldn't necessarily disagree with the philosophy, but I might cheap out at C4 to get an upgrade somewhere on the wing. Ideally, my C1 is like Crosby or Stamkos so I can justify throwing a 9 there, but if I can get away with 7.5 or 8 and redistribute that to get an elite W at 6.5 or so, I'm doing it. Sorta like a 1-2 punch combo a la Perry Getzlaf..

    Pretty cool. Pretty cool.

Interesting post. I started working on mine but lost motivation to finish when math was required. There main modifications are a few guys on 'bargain' contracts are needed (either vets signing with a contender, home town discounts, entry level players, or players who recently 'broke out' but haven't gotten paid yet) and it is too much to ask that there are not some overpayments in the lower lines and defensive pairs for veteran guys with experience. I don't think you can expect league minimum guys throughout or those lines/pairings will be unplayable.

    Line 1: 18M
    LW1: 7.5M (a scoring winger)
    C: 7M (a do it all centerman)
RW1: 3.5M (an underrated aging winger who can handle the top line)

    Line 2: 9.4M
LW2: .9M (an entry level player)
C2: 5.5M (a good scoring center who can play in all three zones)
RW2: 3M (a two way player, and your captain)

    Line 3 - 5.somethingM
    LW3: 1M (hard working d winger)
C3: 3.25M (defensive forward, d draws, pk killer)
RW3: .87M (entry level winger who can score goals)

    Line 4 - 8M
    LW4: 1M (a Kyle Clifford type player)
C4: 5.75M (a do it all centermen who got passed on the depth chart....but will likely play the 2nd pp)
    RW4: 1.25M 4th line responsible player

    $40.6M on forwards

    D1 pairings: $8M
    D1: 7M, Two way stud
    D2: 1M, a complimentary defender

    D2 pairings: 7M
    D3: 3M, complete shutdown defender.
D4: 4M, above average two way defender

    D3 pairings: 4.5M
D5: 1.5M, great puck mover, great mobility
D6: 3M, good shutdown, average mobility

    Defense: 19.5M

    starting goaile: 7M
    backup: .8 (AHL starter)

    goalies 8M

    Great thread, Pengwin! Super fun.

I haven't got time to chime in, but I'd love to see people attach real NHL example players for each position.

Things to factor in would be scoring categories, # of teams, & pick position. If you pick at the end of the first round then you may not get the $9m C, but then a $8m D man or G.
Would use a similar format as Pengy and adjust accordingly. You have to be flexible, as some drafts turn in different directions, such as goalie runs or prospect runs.
$70m doesn't go as far as it use to

    Guru, 5.75M on your line 4 C?

I also would love to get away with a top pairing D-Man at 1M, but unless you're playing a rookie in a complementary role with that stud D, I don't know how you get away with that.

Your top 6 F balance seems bang on to me, tho, as do you 2nd and 3rd pairing D.

I won't break it down on a position basis since I have already done this for my 30 team dynasty NHL salary cap league. I have set an internal cap of $67,000,000 to allow for injury replacements when they come up. Here is the breakdown of what I budget for my team (20 players including 2 goalies):

    Line 1: $16,750,000
    Line 2: $10,050,000
    Line 3: $6,700,000
    Line 4: $4,020,000

    D Pairing 1: $10,100,000
    D Pairing 2: $6,000,000
    D Pairing 3: $4,000,000

    Goalies: $8,040,000
