Default Teams interested in Marty Brodeur

    Chris Peters, CBS Sports-

What is the market for an unrestricted free-agent goaltender likely playing the last season of his career at 42 years old and put up a .901 save percentage last year? Pretty good it sounds like, actually. According to Louis Jean of TVA Sports, goaltender Martin Brodeur's agent says the veteran is garnering interest from as many as six teams.

Jean reports the Toronto Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins, Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins are four of the six teams that have shown interest in Brodeur. The record-setting netminder, who is expected to part ways with the New Jersey Devils after more than 20 years with the club, desires going to a contender.

How Brodeur would perform and handle primarily coming off the bench for a few spot starts is a real question mark as well. He has been well below the league average save percentage over the last four seasons and has been at .901 in each of the last two campaigns. He did take more of a back seat to Cory Schneider last year in New Jersey, but still made 39 appearances in 2013-14. He probably wouldn't see that much action on a team that has a chance at the Stanley Cup next year.

Whether this interest was serious or just cursory from those teams, Brodeur is probably going to find a landing spot that is favorable to his demands, but at least a few of those options don't seem like terribly good fits. He'll be a particularly interesting free agent to watch on July 1.

I can't see Boston signing him. They don't have the cap space to sign their own guys as it is.

I honestly can't see any reason other than publicity to sign him. He's just not close to deserving a job in the NHL at his current skill level. No disrespect honestly, but the guy can only hurt a team at this point.

Stevie Y just showed you how to create cap space in 90 minutes, so that's not really a legitimate reason.

I think Marty should just retire and be a goalie coach in NJ. He has nothing left to prove.

Pittsburgh has Zatkoff - at a fraction of the cost signing Marty would take. There's plenty of more important holes in the lineup to fix than that of a backup goalie and the cap space is limited. Marty ain't coming to Pittsburgh.

Difference is Tampa has most of their RFAs signed. Boston has to still sign Krug, Smith, Caron and Bartowski. Plus Iggy if they want to re-sign him. If they trade Bergeron and Lucic, and get no roster players back in return, then they just might have enough to re-sign those guys, but probably not Brodeur on top of it.

It's going to be a lot harder for Boston to clear cap space in 90 minutes then it was for Tampa.

For the sake of Brodeur being my all-time favorite NHL goalie... this kills me to see he wants to play somewhere else. Like others stated, he's got nothing left to really prove... and he's just not that good anymore. His age is catching up to him. He should stay in Jersey and become some kind of "staff member". I had seeing legends not know when to retire and end up tarnishing their careers jumping teams after 20x years in one place.

    Hang em' up Marty!
