Default Snow wants to be agressive on FA market

Seems like he wants some big names ( Richards??) on the Island.....Aren't they still paying Yashin? Yeah....one more year..... Just saying.....

''Garth Snow was reportedly extremely aggressive in courting top-notch free-agents in the opening of this year's free agent interviewing period which kicked off Wednesday at midnight.

According to Arthur Staple of Newsday, Snow was working the phones starting at 12:01am and apparently reached out to former Rangers center Brad Richards and Pens' defenseman Matt Niskanen. Snow and the Isles gave up their first round pick of 2015 to the Buffalo Sabres in the Thomas Vanek trade, and are determined not to cede a lottery pick such as Connor McDavid or Jack Eichel.''

Good. They should've been better last year, and if they can bring in some vets to help them compete now, they can let their youngsters come in when they're ready. Not saying Richards is the answer, but I think they can afford to throw some money around to earn some wins.

Falling back into the lottery and giving the Sabres a superstar would be worst-case scenario.

With Snow, the word "aggressive" often means stupid. Good luck, Islanders fans.

Looks like the Islanders will be providing some entertainment this offseason. I wonder what horrible signings Snow will concoct.

The problem here isn't if they have the money to get the free agents in the free agents they want but if the players they want will want to come there in the first place.

I think he has a decent chance to make a few splashes this year, the travel schedule on Long Island is decent and with a new building and new ownership - wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of decent names sign there.

There's also a guy named John Tavares that would make a pretty darn good teammate!

so who does he stupidly overpay?

he definitely needs a LW...i'd like to see moulson back, if not cammy (~5-6M for either). perhaps they get a C since strome is still young, so richards (~4-5M)? and then of course niskanen (~5-6M). yup, this will be entertaining for sure.

I don't think Tavares is as big of a drawing point as you think. Sure he's a great player but they don't have a whole heck of a lot other than him and maybe Okposo. Tavares hasn't exactly been a drawing point for free agents in the past either. Top flight free agents are looking for teams where they can win a cup and NYI have had enough trouble even making the playoffs. I remember Buffalo had this attitude a few seasons ago and they ended up signing Ville Lame-o to that horrible contract. I imagine this will end the same way if not worst. Hell just look at the guys who they are targeting.

Here are 3 bold predictions for the Snow show:

    1) Snow offers 7 year contract at 8M per to Stastny

    2) Snow offers 5 years at 4M per to Ben Pouliot

    3) Snow send a 8 year 88M offer sheet to Subban

That seems kinda late for guys with families.. I think both these guys reject Snow's offers because he called them so late..

Snow is pretty underrated when it comes to drafting and free agents. There's no one on the roster that's overpaid, and there are just three guys making more than $4 million (Tavares, Halak and Visnovsky), and only four players signed for longer than the next four years (Tavares, Bailey, Hamonic, Halak). Only two players have no-trade clauses (Tavares and Visnovsky).

Can anyone name the last free agent he gave a horrible contract to? (If anyone says DiPietro, that was eight years ago. If you have to go that far back....).

My guess is he signs someone for long-term but with a friendly cap hit, or he gives someone a whackload of money but on a short-term deal.

Of course, my big guess is he makes a trade for Spezza (something like 35th overall, Bailey or Grabner, and a prospect; or something like fifth overall and a prospect).

Snow would be foolish to trade away 5th overall this year seeing as he doesn't have a 1st rounder next season..

Spending some cash and maybe trading Bailey or Grabner should be all he is thinking about..

Spot on, a fifth overall pick is a nice way to stock the cupboards and will likely be a valuable player that is needed to contribute in the cap era. Definitely his goal should be to keep the pick and make a splash in the FA market.
